Today's Trivia - Alfred Hitchcock and Ovaphobia

Phobias. We all have at least one. I have two: heights and wormlike bugs. Throw a millipede at me and you’ll see me running through a wall if need be to get away from it. Funny but true. Or rather, sad but true. There are many phobias out there; rational and irrational. I believe that as long as they don’t hinder you from living a normal, productive life, it’s not the end of the world.

One of the most interesting ones I ran across recently is ovaphobia - the fear of eggs. I can’t imagine why anyone would be afraid of eggs, but apparently some people are – even famous ones.

Did you know, for example, that Alfred Hitchcock had a morbid fear of eggs? He’s quoted as saying:

“I'm frightened of eggs, worse than frightened, they revolt me. That white round thing without any holes have you ever seen anything more revolting than an egg yolk breaking and spilling its yellow liquid? Blood is jolly, red. But egg yolk is yellow, revolting. I've never tasted it.”

Imagine that. The master of suspense was afraid – and repulsed – by tiny little eggs. Now there’s a fascinating piece of trivia to file away in the “interesting but absolutely useless information” file in your brain.

  1. Oh my...that is fascinating, Martha! Afraid of eggs! I have never heard of such a thing. It's a wonder, I guess, that "The Birds" wasn't filmed with chickens. Thousands and thousands of chickens roosting in the yard, cackling wickedly, laying millions and millions of eggs. *Shudder*

By the way, you and I not only have some of the same pet peeves, we have the same phobias. Despite the fact that I live in the mountains, I am terrified of heights. When I hike here, I get very dizzy if I'm too close to the edge of a cliff. And millipedes...years ago, we had an sudden, inexplicable invasion of millipedes in our house. I was always stepping on them with my bare feet and would scream loud and jump way up in the air every time. They really gave me the heebie jeebies.

  2. That is too funny, Beth! I'm picturing the film "The Birds" with a bunch of chickens running around laying eggs and it's making me laugh out loud. Poor Alfred Hitchcock. I think something like that would drive him mad.

It's amazing how many similarities we have, Beth. I read the posts on your blog and am amazed that I could easily have written something similar. I think I would have enjoyed very much having a neighbour like you.

  4. There seems to be a phobia for almost everything. I once worked with a woman who was a bit phobic of birds, but I'm not sure how she felt about their eggs. I'm a little arachnophobic, which is not so great when you live in Australia where there are spiders, spiders and more spiders!

gippslandgardener, that is too funny - being afraid of spiders in a place where you're overloaded with them! Well, maybe not funny if you're the one that's afraid of them!
