"To dig one's own spade into one's own earth! Has life anything better to offer than this?"
- Beverley Nichols -
I’m chomping at the bit as I anticipate the arrival of spring. I can’t wait to get back outside and embrace my glorious garden. I can’t wait for my backyard to explode with colour when beautiful flowers start popping up all over the place. And I can’t wait till all the critters that migrate south or hibernate during the cold months return to liven things up. I’ve missed the butterflies and the robins and the bees and the hummingbirds and the dragonflies and, most of all, Mr. Inski! Actually, it’s Inskis, since more than one chipmunk visited. I hope a whole bunch of them return this spring. One chipmunk that dropped by regularly last summer was super friendly; he took peanuts right from my hand. He seemed very comfortable around people, which I really enjoyed, but it also worried me because I was afraid that someone cruel might hurt him. But let’s not go there right now because I want this to be a happy post.
And let’s make it a very happy post with some lovely purple blooms from last year’s gardening season. I’ve probably posted purple flowers before, but it’s one of my favourite colours in the garden, so I can’t help doing it all over again.
We’re almost halfway through February, and the days are getting longer. It’s just a matter of time. Tick, tock, tick, tock...
I had forgotten about Mr. Inski!! I agree, purple is a beautiful colour in the garden. LOVE those spotted... not sure what- some variety of lily? They're stunning.
ReplyDeleteThose are toad lilies (can't remember their botanical name!). And not only are they beautiful, they're easy to grow and they are great for shady areas! You can't get better than that.
DeleteOh boy, these pictures are so beautiful they will carry me through to spring! Having moved to the city a few months ago, I must tell you that I am going to miss the purple martins' arrival the most. I don't suppose you keep a martin house in your lovely garden???
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for digital cameras! We can snap hundreds of garden shots through the summer and enjoy them in the winter. Keeps us sane :)
DeleteI don't have a martin house yet, but it is something I want so badly to add to my garden. Maybe this spring?? I have a long list of things I want to do in the garden!
Martha girl !
ReplyDeleteI have been very naughty and have made a few mail order plant "orders" .. I have to actually sit down and draw up the plans I will need when I start taking some parts of the garden .. apart ! eekk!
So a few new plants (I have a feeling I have lost a few with this wacky winter ? weather) are what I need to be motivated.
We have squirrels, doves, local finches, crazy robins, chickadees coming back and forth here .. so there is "life" in the frozen garden but so much more to look forward to and finally come back to us !
Hang in there girl !
Joy
Joy! How are you doing over on your side. I have an email started for you. I will eventually finish it! Yes, I'm hanging in there. It won't be long now!
DeleteWe hiked up Arabia Mountain yesterday and today and even though there was ice on the mountain, there was the most delicate purple wildflowers blooming at the top, right next to the ice!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky living down south! Your weather is so much warmer, which lets you do so many more things than us.
DeleteWhat gorgeous blooms! I've been reading about Mr Inski...I hope he and more of his family show up, chipmunks are so cute!
ReplyDeleteThey are adorable! I hope to see more chipmunks this summer.
