Today's Trivia - Tony The Tiger Had Competition

Since he’s been around for a very long time, you’re probably, more or less, familiar with Tony the Tiger who utters the slogan: "They're Gr-r-reat!". He debuted as the cartoon mascot of Frosted Flakes breakfast cereal in 1951, and still maintains that position today.

But when he made his first appearance, Tony the Tiger competed against three other potential mascots for the public's affection: Katy the Kangaroo (complete with a joey), Elmo the Elephant, and Newt the Gnu. Within a short period of time, Elmo and Newt were dropped (they never once graced the front of the cereal box), and Kellogg Company was torn between Tony and Katy. The company decided to let the consumers decide by introducing both characters on cereal boxes. Boxes featuring Tony sold much better than boxes featuring Katy and her baby, so the motherly marsupial was retired and Tony went on to become a cereal icon.

  2. No offence to Katy, but I prefer Tony the Tiger as well. When I was a kid, it was a super treat to get some Frosties, usually it was just plain old cornflakes or lumpy porridge, yuk!

    1. I prefer Tony the Tiger, too. I'm quite used to him. Not that it makes much of a difference. I don't really care for Frosted Flakes.
