Today's Trivia - Coca-Cola Classic Returns

Today is a very important day. It is the day when the Coca-Cola makers came to their senses and brought back the original taste of this popular soft drink.

A Coke ad promoting the flavour change.
On April 23, 1985, Coca-Cola® introduced “New Coke”, marking the first formula change of this drink in 99 years. They made it sweeter, and some consumers said it tasted like Pepsi. The response to the change was very negative, and it didn’t take long for the company to realize that they had made a colossal mistake.

In less than four months, on this day in 1985, the company announced that they were bringing back the original formula and calling it ‘Coca-Cola classic’. The announcement actually led the evening news as the most important story of the day.

The word “classic” was dropped from Coke’s name in 2009.

  1. Thank God for small miracles. I hated the taste of the new coke. I thought my soda world had come to an end when they changed the taste of Coke.

  4. I've noticed that Coke tastes different in each country I've ever visited. It does have an addictive taste either way, but I can't stand the taste of the diet version.

  6. I am a traitor in that I like Pepsi but only the kind labelled "Pepsi Throwback." It is made with "real sugar" and not syrup sweetener as most soda in the US is in recent years. Sugar is so much better. It tastes like when I was a kid 50 years ago!!!!

    1. Ah, a Pepsi drinker! Good for you Nancy for not following the herd. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about me...LOL... I've actually never heard of Pepsi Throwback. I'm curious now and will have to check if we have it here next time I'm at the market.

  7. Oh the classic taste. I will never forget one day, when I was in my late teens, when a coca-Cola commercial came on and I decided to change the channel. The other channel was also playing the same Coca-Cola commercial. I changed the channel again: surprise, again the coca-cola commercial... and again and again.

  8. Oh yes...I remember well the outrage over New Coke. I thought it was kind of funny, but people do take their soft drinks seriously. I'm a Pepsi girl myself, so I kind of liked the New Coke.
