Today's Trivia - Mr. Bean Is One Smart Cookie

Most people identify Rowan Atkinson with the famous and likeable – albeit slow-witted – fictional character: Mr. Bean. But in real life, this actor is anything but stupid. In fact, he’s very intelligent.

Did you know that he has a master’s degree in electrical engineering? Yuppers.

Rowan Atkinson attended Newcastle University and Oxford University where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering. He took an interest in acting while doing his studies.

That’s one smart cookie.

  1. I would add that it takes a very smart person to be as funny as he is. You really need to know what moves people.

    1. You are absolutely right, Mark. You'd have to be quite smart to perform the way he does.

  3. I love Rowan Atkinson. Have you ever seen his Blackadder series? Classic! And very different than Mr. Bean, although I love Mr. Bean too.

  4. Rowan Atkinson is one of my favourite comedians. I didn't know about his engineering degrees but it doesn't surprise me. Most comdians who portray inept characters are "in real life" very intelligent. I like the fact that Mr. Atkinson does not need to resort to foul language in order to be funny.

    1. I like that, too -- that he doesn't feel the need to resort to foul language. Makes him that much more appealing.

  6. Mr. Bean is fun show. Isn't odd how they spend that time to get a degree when their real love is acting?

    1. I guess there are two very strong sides to this man -- logical and creative -- and eventually he decided the latter was more interesting.

  7. I was a big fan of black adder although i was quite taken aback at how the series ended. Wasn't expecting it. I wonder what he is like in person when he is Rowan Atkinson?

    1. I'm really curious about that series. I will have to look it up. I wonder, too, what comedians like him are like in person. Are they just as funny, or are they more serious? They surprise you sometimes.

  8. Oh yes, I knew this! And I love him as Mr. Bean. I love him singing "Bread of Heaven" in an episode of Mr. Bean, I am afraid that I giggle in church when we sing it.
(He is also the voice of the toucan in The Lion King).

  10. I adore this character. When I lived in England Mr. Bean was at the height of its fame. I just like the silly dry humor of his character. And yes, we should never judge a book by appearances :) He is one smart cookie.

    1. Just goes to show you how much more there can be to someone; this is a fine example of that. We shouldn't judge so quickly.

  11. Oh, I love Mr. Bean! My kids always loved him, too, and we have most of his videos. I had no idea he had a degree in electrical engineering, though I'm not surprised to hear he's smart. Benjamin will be very interested in that since that's his field of study, too.

    1. I had no idea either, so I was pleasantly surprised. I never checked to see if he did anything with his degree, or if he just concentrated on acting.
