Today's Trivia - Move Over Fido...

No doubt about it, Canada is a nation of pet lovers. But do you know what the top choice for a pet is in our nation?

Nope, it’s not a dog...try again.

That’s right...it’s a cat!

Agriculture and Agri-food Canada put together a detailed report cataloguing the number of cats, dogs and other non-human family members and cats took the number one spot. Canadians, apparently, are cat people. More than one third of Canuck households have at least one feline. And just how many pet cats do we winter-hardy bunch own? The number is larger than the combined population of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. In fact, there are more cats in Canada than there are people in Toronto. About 8.5 million domestic felines call the Great White North home.

The second pet of choice is...nope, not dogs...try again...

It’s fish!

Dogs came in third at about 6.4 million, a very respectable number, no doubt about it, but still much lower than cats. It’s not that Canadians don’t love dogs, they do. But dogs require much more maintenance and time commitment. You can’t be too busy – or too lazy – with a dog!

And hey, it’s okay to be a crazy cat lady, after all. Because it’s very Canadian!

So move over, Fido...cats now rule!

    1. Cats have ruled so far in my home, but that's because nobody has the time to commit to caring for a dog. Maybe one day...

  2. Fish aren't pets, they're decor accessories. When's the last time your fish jumped up on your lap?

    1. Dogs need more maintenance, and many people just don't have the time. And to be honest, I'd rather they don't choose a dog if they don't have the time for it, rather than get one and then neglect it!

    1. Hahaha...maybe that's why fish come in second...they need to be replaced often!

  5. I read something or heard something similar. I think the statistics are the same for the states. Cats beat dogs. Not positive though. But it is true about high maintenance. That is the reason I have a cat.

    1. Yes, maintenance definitely plays a huge role in the numbers. If people are very busy, a cat is much easier to care for.

  7. Her Royal Highness approves this post. For good measure, she also farts in the general direction of dogs.

  9. Ha! I have a cat and a dog - and they do NOT get along at all! They get jealous of each other all the time and little spats break out, mainly started by the kitty I have to say.

    1. Yup, sounds about right! I believe cats are more likely to be the instigators in fights. Well, at least your animals haven't killed each other.

  11. I love cats. I wish I could own more of them but my husband thinks two is enough. One day I am just going to come home with a new one.

  12. Cats are truly the rulers of the household when it comes to dogs. My brother's dog Blue got smacked by their cat, and she doesn't attempt to play with him anymore.

    1. I think it's simply because of the volume. You can't just have one fish in an aquarium, so it really adds up.

  15. I wish Terry liked cats! I would love one! Right now we travel too much to have a pet. It wouldn't be fair to it. Love your sidebar cartoons/posters by the way!

    1. You are right; it wouldn't be fair. It is too hard to have a pet when you're traveling that much.
