Holi - the festival of colors celebrated at the end of the winter season - is the most fun-filled and lively of Hindu festivals; an occasion filled with playfulness, music, dance – and lots of bright colours!
No need to dress up for this party. In fact, it’s best that participants dig out their oldest threads in preparation of a huge colour-throwing event.
The celebration begins with the lighting of a bonfire on the Holi eve. Numerous legends & stories associated with Holi celebration make the festival more exuberant and vivid. People rub (and hurl) colourful powders called 'gulal' and 'abeer' on each others' faces. A common expression heard during Holi is ‘bura na mano, Holi hai' ("don't feel offended, it's Holi").
Here are some photos of this fun event:
This is a party!
I'm naturally messy, so this was made for me.
ReplyDeleteA dirty kitty? Unheard of!
DeleteI wouldn't want to be in charge of cleanup afterwards, though.
ReplyDeleteNope. But participating, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind!
DeleteThat's CRAZY ! I didnt' know what I was looking at when I opened up yoru page! I think we should have a party like that here!! My daughters would LOVE it. My wife would hate it (clean up). :-)
ReplyDeleteI think this would be a blast! We do need fun holidays like these.
DeleteWhat a beautiful party!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Minneapolis,
Pearl
It sure is fun! Hello Pearl. Greeting right back from Kingston, Ontario :)
DeleteWell that looks like fun. My grade 5 painting classes often looked like that! You just have to smile went colour is splashed around - even if it is on your clothes!
ReplyDeleteYes, smile and have fun! Reminds me of my elementary school years when we did art...my favourite part of class!
DeleteWe need some really cool and fun festivals in the states. Then again it would be the lawyers that had the most fun...
ReplyDeleteYou are probably right...LOL... But I do agree that we need some cool holidays like this one.
DeleteOh! I need to experience that, what fun. I'd imagine one would feel quite cheerful all coloured up like that!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't you just love to visit when this holiday is going on? Imagine how much fun it would be?
DeleteNow I could get into that in a BIG way ~~~~ those hands in that picture ~~~ just look at the beauty in those colours! Seriously I would love to partake at least once in my life!
ReplyDeleteron
Yup, I would, too! We could let loose and be kids all over again.

DeleteI so love color, and these photos are gorgeous! I think Amazing Race had racers participate in Holi one season. It certainly looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteIt's all the beautiful colours that does it for me, as well. Imagine joining in on a party like this one and just letting loose. How much fun is that?!
DeleteColours seem to be a big part of the Hindu religion. When driving through the Bangladesh countryside, we saw huge, billowing, brightly coloured banners in the middle distance, and were told it was a Hindu festival.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly seems that way. And what a terrific thing that is!
DeleteWow great colors! It looks like fun! (Would not want to be on the clean up crew for some though! LOL)
ReplyDeleteI dropped by to give you this:
