Ever wonder why there are Gideon bibles in hotel rooms. Well, wonder no more; here’s why...
They’re there because the Gideons put them there!
Gideons International is an evangelical Christian organization dedicated to distributing copies of the Bible in over 94 languages and 194 countries of the world, most famously in hotel and motel rooms.
The organization, an early American organization dedicated to Christian evangelism, was founded in 1899 at the YMCA in Janesville, Wisconsin by two traveling businessmen who met by chance when they shared a hotel room at the Central House Hotel in Boscobel, Wisconsin and refined their idea in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. It began distributing free Bibles, the work it is chiefly known for, in 1908, when the first Bibles were placed in the rooms of the Superior Hotel in Superior, Montana.
More than 1.7 billion have been distributed since 1908. On average, more than two copies of the Bible are distributed per second through Gideons International.
(The information above is from here.)
Oh, I always look for one of the Gideon Bibles when I am in a hotel room. I am grateful that they are there.
ReplyDeleteMay I just say...I didn't know that you could put a comment moderation on posts older than 7 days...I might have to do that, I am getting so much spam these days. I wonder why that is?
You're not alone with the spam; I have the same problem. I decided to activate the moderation on older posts to try and control it a little. It has helped somewhat.
DeleteHi Martha and Kay G. ~~~ Jim and I both were receiving numerous unwanted spam, so we followed TexWisgirl suggestion from one of her January posts.
DeleteHave a read HERE and you'll see her disdain for Word Verification. One thing we did though was to use the embedded suggestion and not the pop up. If this is as clear as mud then please ask me for more detailed steps, would be more than welcome to spell it out.
Ron
Thanks for the link, Ron. I'm doing the comment moderation as TexWisgirl suggests in her post, and it does help to keep the spam from showing up live on my blog. Then I just delete all of the spam. Word verification makes me crazy, too, so I avoid it!
DeleteNo harm in trying!!
DeleteAbsolutely! We do what we can to keep those lousy spammers away!
DeleteHee hee, I'd looked them up way back when too -- one just can't help wondering about those Bibles! It's great that they do that, though 99% of the time, I can tell they've NEVER been read.
ReplyDeleteMost of them are brand new, so they're either not being read, or they're being replaced! I have a feeling it's option A.
DeleteI seem to recall that it's OK to "steal" a Gideon bible. True or false?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure. I've never taken one, but I can't imagine that they'd mind.
DeleteI remember hearing about this, it's hard to find a place that doesnt' have them.
ReplyDeleteThat is true. Although I wonder if other faiths will start to add their own text eventually.
DeleteYes I heard it was okay to 'steal' one too. Anyway, it wouldn't do my salvation much good unless it was in large print! :)
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha! That is funny, Francie!
Deleteso funny ... when I hear about Gideon's Bible I think of the Beatles song "Rocky Raccoon" now I have that song stuck in my head!
ReplyDeleteLOL...yes, that is true! Oh oh...now the song is stuck in my head!
DeleteLol, the Beatles song was the first thing to pop into my head too!
ReplyDeleteToday it's in my head!!
DeleteThose sneakers! I did not know that!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm here for...to enlighten people...LOL...
DeleteI never seem to be able to find a Doodle version. Must look into this!
ReplyDeleteHahaha... Well, perhaps you can start this movement!
DeleteI've noticed that occasionally there will also be a Buddhist text in the same drawer too. Never seen any other faith represented though.
ReplyDeleteNope, me neither. I wonder if that will ever change.
DeleteIts nice to see if hotel has a bible in every rooms. Thank you for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteNo problem!
