On Blogging

I don’t know what possessed motivated me to start blogging, and when I finally jumped on that bandwagon, I honestly didn’t believe I would stick around for very long.

Well, four years and 2046 posts later, I think it’s safe to say that I’m quite dedicated to blogging. And I thoroughly enjoy it.

My husband once asked me what it is about blogging that I enjoy so much, and I had to really think about that. I came up with a list of reasons, but I’ll share the top three to keep the post short.

First, my blog allows me a space of my own where I can share thoughts, ideas and photographs, act silly, be creative, and everything else in between without being interrupted or overshadowed by dominant personalities. I have a voice here. And it can be heard.

I like the flexibility. I can put together a post whenever I want. Any time of the day. And I can post whenever I feel like it. Every day. Every second day. Once a week. Once a month. Whenever. Being able to set my own schedule is extremely appealing to me.

But most of all, it’s the people. The amazing, wonderful people that I’ve met – and continue to meet – along the way. From all over the world. That’s what makes blogging so special.

And these amazing people have become important to me. I feel a connection to them. Many of them share bits and pieces of their lives. They make me smile. They make me laugh. They touch my heart and soul. They are creative and inspiring and interesting and entertaining. And I never would have met these exceptional individuals if it weren’t for blogging.

That is the number one reason I continue to blog, and will continue to do so for a long time to come. Because of the amazing people. Because of all of you.

What appeals to you the most about blogging?

  1. I blog for the same reasons you have mentioned!
The FREEDOM to say what I want to say and the JOY of meeting like-minded individuals from all over the world! There, freedom and joy...those are good reasons!
Glad to have met YOU Martha! You make me want to move to Canada!

  2. Those are my top 3 reasons as well. I like that my blog is so uniquely me and people have connected to it without ever even meeting me. Words can be so powerful. Keep on keepin' on girl!!! I hope to make it 4 years like you and write that many posts before I'm senile.

    1. I didn't think I'd stay this long, but I've grown to really enjoy it over time. I don't see myself leaving for awhile.

  3. This is my second time blogging. The first time I blogged it lasted 5 years... I think the reason I had stopped really comes down to my outgrowing the place that I was doing the blogging. Like you, my main reason had been those people that I had connected with... leaving them behind was difficult. I had hoped to just pick up where I had left off by beginning again, but it wasn't the same. All the wonderful personalities that helped make it what it was weren't there anymore... I suppose a time of grief was necessary. Now I'm beginning again... and I'm meeting new and wonderful people like you Martha! Thank you for sharing the bits of you that you do.

    1. Wow, five years! You can certainly become attached to some people during such a lengthy period. It's truly difficult to leave them behind. Some of the visitors to my blog have been around for quite some time, and I really don't want to lose touch with them. We follow each other around. I hope you stick around. I'm just getting to know you, and I am loving your blog!

  4. You really have hit the nail on the head, Martha. When I started I was looking after my very ill old dad and couldn't get out much. It was my major connection to the world for a long time and I'll always be grateful to Doug Jamieson (geezeronline)for taking me under his virtual wing. Eventually I discovered you and all of my other blogging buddies but Doug was my first buddy! :)

    1. There's always that first connection! Sadly, some of mine have left...like Jane, for example. It's sad when bloggers just pack up and leave, but that's the way it goes.

  6. Hi Martha! You summed up the most important reasons I blog very well!!! LOL For me the most surprising thing was meeting all the incredible people like you! I'm not sure what I thought blogging was about, but discovering wonderful people from around the world and realizing that I really like and care about them has been a powerful experience. I'm happy to see that your garden and you are thriving! :)

    1. I know what you mean. In the beginning I had no idea what the heck blogging was all about. I came onboard much later than a lot of people, and I didn't think I'd stay for very long. Well...I'm still here...LOL... And now it's impossible to leave since I've met so many amazing people!

  8. I think you've shared the things I love too. I'd add that I get to associate with people who's circles I'd ordinarily never run across. Like certain types of professionals and people in different age groups. I'm happy I've met you!

BTW, the photos on this post are the most beautiful you've taken since I started reading your blog... the one of the little chips is beautiful.

    1. Thank you, Ana! You know how much I love to take photos. Keeps me focused --- and happy.

Yes, blogging allows my voice to be heard. As an introvert, I'm often overshadowed by the extroverts in real life. Here, I'm in charge...LOL...
