Damn, but it’s hot outside. We’re certainly in the midst of the dog days of summer. It’s so warm and humid that I almost miss complaining about the winter. Almost.
Days like this bring back memories from my childhood. Those two months off from school in the summer were highly anticipated, and thoroughly enjoyed. Along with every other kid in the neighbourhood, I spent my days outdside. From dawn to dusk. Every. Single. Day. Running and playing and exploring and laughing.
Of course, we wore sunscreen and hats and whatever other protection was needed, and we kept in the shade as much as possible. But we remained outdoors. Because hanging around the house back then was unthinkable. You only stayed inside if you were punished.
No one I knew had air-conditioning, so we stayed cool with chilled drinks, popsicles, and of course, ice cream, which you ate as fast as you could because it melted quickly in the heat and ran down your arm.
Oh, those wonderful dog days of childhood summers...they were really something. We tolerated the heat and made the best of it. That’s kids for you. But I grew older, and somewhere along the line I wimped out. Now the heat just gets on my nerves.
Things have certainly changed since then.
What’s your weather like these days?
Fun post!!! I can remember when my family got their first air conditioner. It was sooo cold...hahaha
ReplyDeleteWe never had air-conditioning, and some of those summers the house felt like an oven!
DeleteWhen I was a kid, sunscreen hadn't even been thought of. No one wore hats either. Oh, days of innocence!
ReplyDeleteThings were so much different back then!
DeleteWe never had central air growing up in PA because we didn't need it. I remember our first window unit and thinkin' we were HOT stuff!!!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know anyone that had an air-conditioner back then. I didn't get a unit until I was into my adult years.
DeleteOur temp broke records here in northern NB, Martha. It's so unusual for us to have these 100ºF+ days that we barely have time to complain and they're gone again LOL. When I was a child (early 60's), I don't think sunscreen had been invented. We spent all day, every day, outdoors and turned a golden brown by the end of summer; I don't remember anyone ever suffering sunburn. *Sigh* Apparently we still had some ozone back then...
ReplyDeleteYup, we still had some ozone back then. And screwed it all up! Now you need to protect yourself in every which way.
Deletelol, enjoy it while it lasts! But this is the time of year you force yourself to remember how cold it gets in January!
ReplyDeleteI'd rather be in this season than winter. There is so much more to do, and there is life out there!
DeleteHahaha, that third picture - that's pretty much my reaction to my customers' whining about the weather. I just say it a bit more politely. And I don't tell them that what I actually remember isn't last year's weather, but last year's whining!
ReplyDeleteThis time of year - every year - it's the same thing: hot, hot, hot! I don't like the severe heat, but I'd rather this than the winter. But for some people, it is extremely difficult. This type of heat and humidity is dangerous for people suffering from respiratory problems and other health issues. Even elderly folks have to be careful.
DeleteI hear ya! And loved the cartoons. they said it all!
ReplyDeleteThis too, as they say, will pass! And we'll go back to the glorious days of summer.
DeleteI can't complain about the heat because I work in a kitchen and it's still hotter in there then outside. So when I go outside, it's like woo, cooler.
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend :-)
I can certainly understand that!
DeleteSun screen? Heck, when we were kids, we actually smeared a mixture of baby oil and iodine on our skin so we could get a tan faster. (Or like me, get sunburned faster.)
ReplyDeleteI can't complain about our weather. The worst it's been has been around the ninety degree mark, and we've had quite a bit of rain. Much better than the drought and higher temps of the past few years, but if the rain doesn't ease up a bit, we're all gonna rust.
Yes, last year was much worse with its severe drought and heat. This year pales in comparison!
DeleteWe're having our worst heatwave ever - nearly two weeks of Hell. Praying for rain and a break.
ReplyDeleteWe are probably having the same weather, you and I. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the hottest heat wave on record. Temperatures have really high. It's still better than last year with its weeks and weeks and weeks of heat and drought. This will pass soon.
