And Here We Are In November

“November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.”

- Clyde Watson -

It was quite mild yesterday, which isn’t always the case at the end of October, and the high temperatures would have made for a super Halloween for the kids if it hadn’t been for the rain. Because of that, there weren’t that many witches and goblins out and about. Poor kiddies. Better luck next year!

Anyhow, so here we are in the month of November. Already. And, of course, all the stores are going to start going nuts about Christmas. Some start going nuts as soon as October arrives. I expect that one day soon I’ll be hearing Christmas songs playing at one shop or another. Let’s all take a deep breath and relax. There’s still time.

This weekend we turn back the clocks, and it’ll start getting dark early. Very early. And this month it’ll start getting colder. Much colder. So we can look forward to limited daylight, chilly days, no more autumn splendour and no garden. November can be downright depressing, can’t it?

Well, we’ll just have to make the best of it, won’t we?

Have a good month, everyone, and an awesome weekend!

  1. LOL oh that's fantastic you're looking at me there, It's november It's cold it's starting to smell a lot like Christmas I can't help it True Jesus was born in late Fall why do you think the colours are so magnificent but Christmas although a Pagan Holiday, a Winter Solstice it is still used for the birth of Jesus so you see Jesus was born before the witches, so I can start celebrating in Oct, but I wait until Nov. So let me be the first to wish you a Very Merry Christmas lol xx

    1. Christmas has always been (and always will be) my most beloved holiday. I have a lot of wonderful memories of it, and I simply adore it. I don't get caught up in the material side of it; it's become so commercial. Christmas for me is about being with people we love, about compassion, about sharing, about warmth and love. So as long as I keep seeing it that way, it'll be the best time of the year.

    3. Today is the day our clocks go back. We just finished adjusting all of ours. Today it will get dark very early, which is kind of sad. We'll just have to make the best of it. I'm looking forward to Christmas. At least there's something nice during winter.

  2. Halloween night was beautiful here -- we had more kids than usual because of the nice weather. Of course, we're supposed to get 18" of snow this weekend so nothing lasts forever! Love that Santa LOL!

    1. There were more kids at the mall this year; not so many on the street. It was drizzling outside and that's one big way to discourage the trick or treaters. You had a much more welcome environment!

Snow? No way! It's too soon for that.

  3. Crap. I forgot about daylight savings. I hate it when it gets dark at 4:30.

    1. Yeah, me too. It's downright depressing. And the days will keep getting shorter until the third week of December.

  4. Oh, i feel sorry for all those poor little kiddies that come home and see all the 'good Halloween candy' has been eaten by their parents. LOL That is a funny card.
It was a chilly night here on Halloween but I had a ball out with my granddaughter Rose, she was so excited .
I hate that we are turning our clocks back this weekend, hate driving home in the dark and can;t wait for spring .
Some stores are here have their Christmas stuff out already ...oy , much too early

    1. I bet it was wonderful with your little Rose. I hope one day to have grandchildren. I imagine the holidays will be that much more special with little ones around.

Some stores here have Christmas stuff up, too. I guess in a way it adds a little colour in an otherwise dull month. Still. It's much too early!

  5. You are so right about eating your kids' Halloween candy! I snuck 2 Snickers bars out of their bags this morning and hid them for my future cravings.

  7. LOL! I so relate to the FB entry. I hate turning the clock forward or back. I always protest and resist... until I start running late or early for things. Even my phone won't let me forget it! Changing itself on it's own to the "Right" time. :P

We had no one come to the house last night so the guys have candy bars for breakfast. Ewww... It was so rainy and windy and other such nasties that they cancelled Halloween to be rescheduled for goodness knows when in many cities and villages south in our state. Well, it's still extremely blustery and rainy and cold... so hmmmm.... Happy November! (I started seeing Christmas stuff up in stores in September! Good gracious Gertie, it gets earlier every year.

    1. I hate the time change. It's so depressing that it starts getting dark at 4:30 in the afternoon. We need daylight!

We are going to be flooded with Christmas decorations soon. Already the stores are starting to put some up.

  9. Love the November poem ! It is still as windy as heck here has been since yesterday but the rain has finally let off now and it is cloudy with sunny breaks temps are warm but feels cool cause of the winds . I look forward to frost and snow for photography purposes but other then that NOT ! lol ! The stores here have already started the Christmas songs and displays have been up for some time . I worked in a large department store before I retired and it got where I was pulling my hair out with the Christmas songs and stuff being done months before lol ! Thanks for sharing . Have a good weekend !

    1. Hahahha...yes, I can imagine that listening to Christmas songs over and over again while working would drive you nuts!

I'm also looking forward to taking photos when the frost and snow arrives, but not looking forward to winter! I'd love if it only stuck around for the holidays and then disappeared!

  11. Such a fun post! I love the Santa poster. I need to calm down--I get stressed just thinking about what I need to do to get ready for the holidays!

I like that November poem, too. Describes the month perfectly.

  12. Guess what, we have clock that automatically changes the one hour X 2 yearly.....well it changed a month ago, so we've been on the new time for that period. SO weird......I tried to fix it with some serious button flicking and slamming of clock, but nuttin' honey. Sunday morning we'll be back to normal.

  14. oh you make me giggle! I LOVE that Nov 1 is 'eat your kids candy while they are at school' day. I'm down with that! and agree that Christmas advertising really has gone overboard ....waaaaay overboard

    1. Christmas has become way too commercial. I try not to get caught up in that, and simply enjoy the feeling of it with people I care about.

    1. We stopped in at the mall Halloween evening and there were quite a few kids there. I guess it was one way for them to get some candy while staying out of the rain!

  17. Hahaha.. I love that FB post! Halloween largely came and went without much attention since it's not really part of the culture here. But I surely enjoy seeing how people get all dressed up for it!

  18. I must confess that I love November. The hiking is wonderful, and I enjoy getting back to cooking winter meals again. And of course here in the states, people are already talking about Thanksgiving…..

    1. November is a nice month here as long as the weather cooperates. Or else it totally sucks. At least in the States there is Thanksgiving to look forward to. A holiday always makes the month that much better.

  20. Once Halloween is over I want to just curl up into a ball but this November I plan on crocheting and cooking lots of hearty food. Enjoy being ahead of the gang. I like the sci-fi way you think.

    1. I'd love to skip forward to the Christmas holidays, and then into spring. But since I'm not able to do that, I'll make the best of it. Cooking some hearty food sounds like a great idea!

  21. Hi Martha! Catching up again! Life is always busy! I so enjoyed the pictures of your girls and you on previous Halloweens! No trick-or-treaters come our way, which makes me a little sad. I used to dress up when I passed out treats and counted the little ghosts and goblins in the 100+ numbers. Loved the November poem, by the way. I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

    1. Hi Louise! It's always nice to see you here. Yup, life certainly does get busy. Dressing up to give out treats is always so much fun. I used to do it all the time and the kids that I opened the door to really liked it. I will get back into that spirit again at one point.

  22. No kids or Halloween candy here (dammit!) but the hour back has totally screwed me up (again!)
As far as the holidays are concerned, I don't go for all the hype and just try to enjoy.

    Happy November Martha!
