Bad Hairstyles, Bad Fashion... That’s How We Rolled

Nothing screams the 70s like outrageously bad fashion. Here are a couple of examples that will have you saying “What the hell were they thinking?”

My. Eyes. Hurt.

What has been seen cannot be unseen...

I wasn’t spared from this outrageously terrible fashion era. And neither were my brothers:

At least we all dressed equally badly.

Pretty scary, no? What’s even scarier is that I must have liked the pink outfit because I wore it again on another occasion:

Yes, I'm the one with that 'funky' pink suit. My two brothers are to the left (in front).

But how could I know any better? I was a helpless, malleable child during those years, and trusted my mother’s fashion sense. Right down to the shoes. Like in the photo below. Shoes that look like they come from a bowling alley.

The bowling alley must have had a sale on shoes. My in-the-navy-looking outfit isn't much better.

It’s fun going through these old photos taken during some of the best years of my life. I'd do it all over again if I could...bad hair, bad fashion and avocado-coloured appliances included!

  1. Even in the 1970s I owned nor wore any clothing like the men's clothes shown here. It was jeans or slacks for me. At $27 I couldn't afford these clothes even if I would wear them.

    1. I spent my teenage years in denim. Still prefer it to anything else! I never chase fashion, no matter whether it's pricey or not!

  2. I feel your pain, Martha. I was a teenager in the early 70s. I cringe now, thinking of the gawdawful stuff I wore back then.

    1. Yes, times certainly change! Sometimes certain fashions return. But I hope these never do.

  7. Hi Martha! You fashionable photos made me remember and laugh! But I think the current fashions are much worse! By the way, Thank you for posting the amazing video of the Canadian forces throughout time. It gave me shivers. I really missed teaching my kiddos "In Flanders Fields" this year and spending time talking with them about Veterans Day and Remembrance Day.

    1. Louise, I couldn't agree more. There are some things nowadays that are pretty ridiculous. I think every generation thinks it's the best one :) It's when we look back that we ask "What the hell were we thinking?"

  8. Oh, my, I have pictures like that! This had me laughing because of the similarities. And because of the seriousness with which we wore those outfits! Thanks for sharing these. :-)

  9. Those are hilarious. I have similar photos. I think you're the one who looks the most stylin' and least embarrassing.

  13. I'm not sure if the seventies was so much bad fashion as an adventurous time in fashion. It's interesting to compare Montreal to western Canada.

    1. It was definitely an adventurous time in fashion. And some of it was a little TOO much of an adventure... Hahaha...

  16. Don't forget hot pants -- my mom made me an outfit for my first day of junior high that would be scandalous by today's standards. And I had a similar pair of "bowling shoes" only in autumn colored suede. I thought I was stylin'. Lol! Loved this post.
