“True benevolence, or compassion, extends itself through the whole of existence
and sympathizes with the distress of every creature capable of sensation.”
- Joseph Addison -
Last month I shared photos of animals at the Toronto Zoo that we visited in August of this year. Today I’d like to share another round of pictures taken that day, and attach a quotation to each one like I did last time.
"Because the heart beats under a covering of hair, of fur, feathers, or wings, it is, for that reason, to be of no account?" - Jean Paul Richter - |
"Deliberate cruelty to our defenceless and beautiful little cousins is surely one of the meanest and most detestable vices of which a human being can be guilty." – William Ralph Inge - |
"All beings tremble before violence.
All fear death, all love life. See
yourself in others. Then whom can you hurt? What harm can you do?" - Buddha - |
“It is man’s sympathy with all creatures that makes him truly a man.” - Albert Schweitzer - |
"There is something very foul and evil in the lives of men and women who delight in destroying helpless life, especially in what is known as "blood sports." - Rev'd F. C. Baker - |
Some of the animals at such locations are endangered, and the biggest threat to their survival is humans. We must do better.
Have a lovely Tuesday, everyone.
what a thoughtful post Martha! beautiful pictures, and equally beautiful quotes
ReplyDeleteThanks, Antiquity. Just things to ponder...
DeleteWe should all be ashamed of ourselves for what humanity has done to the natural world and its creatures.
ReplyDeleteYou bet we should! Perhaps the next generation will do much better.
Deletethat owl looks very sleepy
ReplyDeleteIt sure was. Spent most of the time dozing off!
DeleteThis sis such a powerful post. Cruelty to animals is so heart breaking. Your photos are very touching and amazing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by and leaving this lovely comment. Cruelty to animals is terribly heartbreaking. I cannot understand people who do that, and feel nothing.
DeleteI love the leopard picture. I think you quotations you chose for these pictures are absolutely perfect :)
ReplyDeleteThe leopard is so beautiful. It was hard getting photos because most of these animals are at a distance, but I tried my best.
DeleteThose big cats are amazing!
ReplyDeleteThey sure are. I just love them! Such magnificent creatures.
DeleteThese are stunning, you have them at their best here!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christine :)
DeleteAmazing post, Martha! Your photos and the quotes that go with them are profound. I especially loved the stunning zebra! I always love your photo dumps ~ You have such a good eye! And your latest Chortles and Chuckles post had me laughing, especially the Wiley Coyote one! But with all the shenanigans over legalizing recreational pot here in Colorado, I really laughed over the pot cartoon.
ReplyDeleteHahaha...yes, that pot cartoon is hilarious! I can just picture these two totally different characters. One foaming at the mouth, the other totally relaxed. Hahaha...
DeleteAll good. Though the second to last gets my top vote because I love pooped animals.
ReplyDeleteCats...no matter what kind...are champion sleepers!
DeleteThe white ones look like royalty. I love that adorable penguin too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the beautiful quotes and pictures.
Be well, Martha.

ReplyDeleteThanks, CraveCute, and thanks for your lovely comment!
DeleteOh Martha, you must know how much I love this, all of it, the photos and the quotes, just perfect! Well done, you.
ReplyDeleteHahaha... Thank you, Kay! You always make me smile :)
DeleteYou are so right. We must do better.
ReplyDeleteBut will we? I wonder what it takes to make humans a better species?
DeleteAll beautiful as always, Martha... gorgeous photography and quotes.... I like ... I loathe loathe loathe LOATHE the mindset of people who think it's fun to kill for trophies or to wear their fur or feathers ... toucans were killed for their beaks to make ashtrays?????? can't stand it ....
ReplyDeleteThere is something very foul and evil in the lives of men and women who delight
in destroying helpless life, especially in what is known as "blood sports."
- Rev'd F. C. Baker -
Oh, Carolyn, I agree completely! You have no idea how much it hurts me the way so many animals are exploited. Toucan beaks as ashtrays? I've never heard of that. That is disgusting! But not surprising. That's humans for you. Bleh...
DeleteMartha, I have never seen a Zebra this close up and I am amazed at its intricacy. What a beautiful animal and your photo is magnificant.
ReplyDeleteThey are pretty amazing, aren't they? I think taking photos of all these creatures makes me truly notice just how magnificent they are.
DeleteHow very wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you, greenthumb!
DeleteFantastic Images!
