Every December, for many years, I took my kids to see Santa Claus. I’d get the annual kids-visiting-with-Santa photo, and they’d get an opportunity to tell him what their ‘I-absolutely-must-have-this’ gift of choice is. And most of the time it was a very pleasant experience all around. The kids smiled. Santa smiled. Everybody smiled.

But there were times when it was a very
unpleasant experience all around. One of the kids didn’t smile. Santa didn’t smile. Nobody smiled.

Doesn’t Santa look as miserable as my daughter? And eager to get rid of her? Well, who can blame my kid for feeling terrified? At that young age, a rosy-cheeked guy with a long white beard and strange clothing is...well...a bit of a freak.
Still. Things could’ve been more traumatizing. There are much worse Santas out there. Santas that cause nightmares. And years of therapy.
Like in these old photos that I ran across this week:
Not exactly the kind of Santas you want coming into your home, now, are they? Um...no…
To scary .
ReplyDeleteOh, yes!
DeleteWHOA those couple black and white photos are creepy. Those Santas look like pervs.
ReplyDeleteThey sure do!
DeleteSOOO glad we don't have a chimney...
ReplyDeleteHahahaha! Yes, that would be a bonus in this case!
DeleteThose old ones are funny, I remember those days.
ReplyDeleteWith those types of Santas, I'm surprised the tradition continued!
DeleteCall the SWAT Team!
ReplyDeleteAnd get those maniacs out of there!
DeleteFriggin' Scary stuff......bazooka them all out of the skies.....now I feel strangely better!
ReplyDeleteHahahaha! That is funny....
DeleteOne of our malls puts on a seniors lunch at Christmas. They each get a certificate for a picture with Santa. My wife always gets a picture while I stand there being very embarrassed. So the kids don't know whether to laugh or cry. I don't know what the people were thinking with the freaky Santa outfits.
ReplyDeleteDon't be embarrassed. I think it's fun what your wife does! I'd probably do the same. Sounds like she's got some kid in her!
DeleteOh Gosh these Santa Klaus are terrifying and good heavens your older daughter looks like you it's amazing but those old photos are you sure they didn't miss Halloween and Christmas
ReplyDeleteI meant MIXED are you sure they didn't mix Halloween and Christmas LOL
DeleteYes, they mixed up Halloween with Christmas. These Santas are creepy!
DeleteYikes! Those 'last' Santas was pretty freaking weird looking!
ReplyDeleteNot the type you want coming down your chimney!
DeleteScary Claus
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
DeleteOh my gosh, they get scarier as I scroll down.
ReplyDeletePretty damn frightening!
Deleteha! have to laugh at this one. When my oldest was about 3 years old we couldn't get her anywhere near Santa. After about 10 minutes of trying I finally snap the picture with her in one corner of the photo and Santa in the other - something like 3 yards away from her
ReplyDeleteHahahaha...that sounds so funny! Definitely a memory you'll all laugh about over the years. You should share it on your blog.
DeleteGood lord, Martha, thiose are the worst Santas I have ever seen. They'd turn me off Christmas completely if I ever met them. Your kids on the other hand are cute as button whether they are smiling or not!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Francie! It stuns me how many years have gone by; the girls are so grownup now!
Deletewow... those last few Santas were certainly not jolly! heeby jeeby stuff... lol
ReplyDeleteaw.... your babies! how precious ... more! love learning about m'blog pals and the families!
