Well, it’s that time, folks, when we promise to do this, that and the other, and end up doing nothing. Well, I don't break promises, because I don't make resolutions anymore. Haven’t done so in years.
When I was much younger, I started off each New Year with a list of things I planned to do, and then spent the next twelve months not doing them. I had good intentions, and my initial efforts were admirable, but as more and more time went by, I couldn’t be bothered.
Now, I just promise to try. I don’t promise to do something, only try to do it. And if by trying it becomes a permanent habit, all the better. And if I quit along the way, or never even start, no problem. Win-win. Lazy, sure. But much easier on the conscience.
What’s the ‘try’ forecast for 2014? Well, I’m going to try to get involved more. Maybe do some volunteer work. Or join some group. Or take a class. Take my photography to new levels. More road trips. Discover new places. Live. With enthusiasm. That’s the word of the year ‘enthusiasm’. It’s a good word. A good way to live each day.
So no more ‘New Year, New Me’ crap for this girl. Just a whole lotta ‘try this or that’. With enthusiasm. And ‘see where I end up’!
Do you make resolutions?
I have never been the type to make new year resolution's . My theory is live life as you want to and enjoy it for it is yours to live . Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteYup, just enjoy it. One day at a time!
DeleteWell this is strange - just lost my comment - hope it doesn't come through twice. Anyway I love the superhero comments, superman made me laugh out loud. And I like resolving to TRY new things. Give you some room to move around inside your own conscience!
ReplyDeleteTrying is the best! Especially when you're allowed to 'try' some flavours at the ice cream shop before you settle on one :)
DeleteI think Bruce Banner's list would be the opposite of Hulk's
ReplyDeleteYou are probably right!
DeleteNo resolutions for me. Not to say that I don't require some "tuning up" but I just don't want to have the guilt of not meeting my expectations. I am like you, Martha, in that I will try but not broadcast to the world "the new me". Maybe this happens as we get older/wiser. We just don't need to be "sheeple" and do what is expected. Happy New Year. Oh yeah... one resolution is to try to meet with you more regularly.
ReplyDeleteI think you are right, Cathy. As we get older, and hopefully wiser!, we don't need to do this. Just take it one day at a time, and see where we end up. That is a great 'single' resolution. I would love to see you more regularly!
DeleteI'm just going to try to be more balanced this year. Try! You are wise not to make a whole lot of resolutions, then feel like crap if you don't keep 'em! Love the kitty at the top!
ReplyDeleteTrying is a good word! You're not really committed to anything, just curious about stuff.
DeleteWhat a funny post! No, I don't make resolutions. All I want right now is to be better.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hope this year is that year for you, Birdie; where everything falls into place.
DeleteLol, I don't make resolutions!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the club!
DeleteNo resolutions for me, either. Well, I do want to get a faster time in the 5K this year. Otherwise, I think it's stupid to make annual goals. I'm wondering, though, if Batman has anyone to cuddle with. I'd gladly volunteer, even if I need to shove Robin aside.
ReplyDeletexoRobyn
Maybe that's all he needs Robyn, someone who wants to cuddle with him. Go for it, girl...as soon as you can locate that well-hidden bat cave.
DeleteI never make resolutions for more than a month in advance, and I try to do that all year (though I did slack off last year... 2013 wasn't my best). So the plan for January is to every day *leave the house, *do some cleaning and/or gardening, * do something creative, *blog, *talk to people, * read a book.
ReplyDeleteIt's really helping me get out of hibernation mode!
Those are great goals, very similar to mine. I like to do something every day to keep from losing my mind...hahaha...
DeleteOh I SO love your ENTHUSIASM Martha! And I think you have the best approach to all this resolution stuff.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the comics!
It's a great word, no? ENTHUSIASM. It even sounds nice.
DeleteHow freaking hilarious. You just bring a smile to my face with your posts. Yeah, I have resolutions but, like you, I will "TRY." LOL! Fabulously funny post. Cheers!!
ReplyDelete"Try" is the perfect way to keep from actually committing to anything. Then you can back out without any guilt. Win-win! Cheers to you, and happy weekend!
DeleteNo, I never make them. But I do, each new season, set a new challenge for myself, something that I want to do in three months. It's generally only one goal, a reachable one. And also, Tim and I each get a gift on the first day of each season. Just something little. But it's great fun.
ReplyDeleteNew Year's though, that whole new me new year crap, is not for me.
That is a great idea! A new challenge... I like it! And I love that you give each other a little gift at the start of each season. How romantic and sweet!
DeleteGood luck in all that you try to achieve in 2014 Martha. xo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nancy. I hope it's a great year for you!
DeleteHa Ha ~ so funny, Martha! I'm with you ~ ENTHUSIASM ~ for everything life has to offer! Love Sean Bean! Love that meme! Maybe I'll make it a resolution to watch Sean Bean more this year ~ I could approach that with enthusiasm. His LOTR Boromir was compelling, and I will never forget him as Ned Stark! But I need to resolve to replace my broken DVR player. Tried once last summer, but gave up ~ The E~P and I are hopeless with tools! Terry gave me a surprise FitBit for Christmas, and ~ OH Surprise ~ I surprised him with the same model only black instead of blue. We are driving each other nuts trying to beat each other every day. He's at the gym right now, while I'm tackling another resolution ~ trying to catch up and stay caught up with my favorite blogs! Like yours! Have a happy, happy 2014! Eat lots of dark chocolate ~ that's my favorite resolution for the year!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're already off to a good start...and having a grand old time! Dark chocolate...mmmm...sounds good to me. I'm glad I'm one of those people that like it. It tastes good, and it's much better for you. Eat it with ENTHUSIASM! :)
