A very young John Travolta in 1976. |
Tiger Beat was known for its covers with 'cut and paste' collaged photos of teen idols, and for its glossy pinup posters that made for great wallpaper that I plastered all over my room’s walls.

Teen idols in 1978. |
Back in my day it was all about guys like Leif Garrett, Shaun Cassidy, Donny Osmond, Robby Benson, John Travolta, Andy Gibb, (bestillmybeatingheart) Matt Dillon, and a whole bunch of others.

I would have bought any magazine with Matt Dillon in it. |
And the Bay City Rollers. Do you remember them? OHMYGOD, they were so popular back then. The members of this Scottish pop band were worldwide teen idols for a brief but fervent period (nicknamed “Rollermania”). I was a huge fan of their hit song ‘Saturday Night'.

The Bay City Roller's popularity was highest in the 70s. (1977) |
Anyway, we saved our allowance to buy this publication, and each month we handed the money to a girl in our school who was the designated magazine buyer and distributor. The reason for this was that she passed by a store on her way to and from school each day that sold Tiger Beat. So when the latest publication arrived, she’d stop in, pick up a whole bunch of magazines, bring them to school, and pass them out to whoever had placed an order.
The corner store was located here:
When we started high school, we picked up our own magazines, and the Tiger Beat buyer/distributor position was terminated. |
Next time I’m in Montreal, I’ll have to take photos of the store front. The memory of this magazine didn’t come back to me until after I’d returned to Kingston.
It seems the store is still in operation, although I’m sure it’s changed owners by now. |
And you just know I was going to include a video of the Bay City Roller’s ‘Saturday Night’ smash hit. I don’t know how many times I listened to this song as I prepared this post. Thank goodness I wear headphones because my 16-year-old daughter would have gone mental listening to this over and over and over and over again...
Oh, the memories...
Have a great day, everyone. It's snowing here again...*sigh*
What memories you brought back, I was hooked on those mags. And of course, what would we have done without the corner store?
ReplyDeleteYes, those corners stores were the best!
DeleteOh gawd, TIGER BEAT! I haven't thought of that mag in years! And then THE BAY CITY ROLLERS! Did I ever mention about the time I had to take my little sister to one of their concerts? I was in university and I'm sure I was the oldest person there. LOL, boy bands!
ReplyDeleteHahaha...I love this! I wish I'd had a big sister to take me to things like this. You are way cool, Debra!
Deletelistening to this song now ... holy moly! I do like music and I do like rock in most forms ... oh, you kid ... this is great getting up and moving music! this would have been wonderful on my Walkman while I cycled or walked... yay! I like it... gonna put it on my 'get up and boogie' playlist!
ReplyDeletelove your nostalgic posts, Martha... I'm moving ... yeah baby ... can't sit still with this playing ... hahaaa ~ WOW ~ good morning!
Isn't this just a fun song, Carolyn? Brought me all the way back to my teen years. And after all these years, it still puts me in a dancing mood. Love it!
DeleteThose people had some really big hair on those magazine covers :)
ReplyDeleteBig hair era!
DeleteHi Martha! I knew your last few posts would buoy me up. I'm still reeling from Jim's post, although I believe things will be fine for Ron. Thank goodness for your clean bill of health! It's an incredible blessing that we must never take for granted!
ReplyDeleteThat poor robin with its tongue stuck to the mailbox posts! It reminds me of the time my brother and I went to the Saturday afternoon movies in Greenwood (air base), Nova Scotia, during a snowstorm. We didn't know that the movies had been cancelled because of the storm, and somehow we bamboozled Mom into letting us go. We got bored waiting for the theatre to open. Roy stuck his tongue on the theater door handle and couldn't unstick it. The MPs found us, put us in a cell at their police station, and then had Dad come get us out. I'm sure Dad had them do that to teach us a lesson! I'm still laughing. The MPs had to pull Roy's tongue off the door handle ~ not really funny ~ unless you are his competitive sibling!
Your magazine was after my time ~ but I do remember the bands. Donny and Marie are still going strong. Terry and I saw their show in Las Vegas fairly recently. Take care!
OHMYGOD...what a funny story that is! I'm sure it wasn't very fun for you and your brother at the time, but I bet it is now!
DeleteYup, Donny and Marie are still going strong. Some artists just keep chugging along.
Gack! I adored Tiger Beat! Lol. Shaun Cassidy was my favorite i think. Plus he was a 'Hardy Boy! Thing is, as adult men, not one single one of them is attractive to me. Not one iota. Have you seen Leif Garrett lately?? Lol again.
ReplyDeleteI know! I've seen photos of them all, and they are sooooo different!
DeleteOh my gosh, yes. I do remember those and I loved Saturday Night but the Bay City Rollers. Boy, I'm feeling old now. lol Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed, Bird. It's a fun trip down memory lane for us gals!
DeleteAfter my time but I enjoyed this a lot! Oh the thrills of a teen age girl magazines filled with pictures of movie stars!! Wonderful memories!
ReplyDeleteAnd those pictures wallpapered our rooms! Oh, such fun times!
DeleteMartha,
ReplyDeleteI loved that magazine.
You brought back to me some great memories of ''my good ole days"
Great post, so enjoyed it.
We are getting snow too.... '

Glad you enjoyed, Margie! We all have fun memories from our 'good ole days'!
DeleteA magazine name like that probably wasn't PETA's favorite
ReplyDeleteYou might be right, Adam!
Delete'Someone help me, help me help me pleeeaaase, this is not a puppy Love' How can I how can I listen to the Bay City Rollers when my sound doesn't work....darn I remember school dances and dancing to this and oh I loved David Cassidy and Donny Osmond and then not impressed with Shaun until I heard 'When I was 16 and out of school, I didn't know what I wanted to do, ma' sent shivers down my spine'
ReplyDeleteIt's fun reminiscing about those days, isn't it? I love to think back and remember some of the good times we had!
Deleteand it does bring you right back so much so that you get a little disoriented, I love it...
ReplyDeleteThat is true, Lorraine! And as I get older, there is more distance between the present and the past. You can imagine just how disoriented I am...hahaha
DeleteTiger Beat. How could I forget the hours spent leafing through that mag?
ReplyDeleteDo you still call convenience stores depanneurs or "deps?"
In Quebec, they're called deppanneurs or 'deps', as you say. But here they are called convenience stores.
DeleteThis post brought back alot of memories for me! I was a Bay City Roller Fan too!
ReplyDeleteFun memories, aren't they? I enjoy looking back at things I used to like back when I was a youngster! Thanks for stopping by Tina.
