Long Before The Grumpy Cat...

...there was Morris the cat; the world’s most finicky feline, and the snarky advertising mascot for 9Lives brand cat food whose celebrity status goes back a long, long time. All the way back to the late 60s.

Morris has starred in commercials, appeared as a “spokescat” to promote responsible pet ownership, pet health and pet adoptions through animal shelters, and even “authored” three books. We weren’t internet addicts back then, so Morris entertained us via TV instead.

The original Morris.

Three different cats have held the famous position of “Morris the Cat”; all rescues. The original one, previously named Lucky, was discovered in 1968 at a Chicago-area animal shelter, and from 1969 to 1978, he completed 58 commercials. Many of which I saw when they were playing on TV because I also go  back a long, long time.

Are some of you feeling your age? Me, too.

The Morris that was around during my childhood died in 1978, but I still remember him fondly. He is one of the reasons I eventually got a cat. Because who doesn’t want a pet with a snarky attitude that expects to be served?

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Here's the original Morris in action...

  3. Thanks for the memories! How fun to revisit Morris! I've been enjoying your recent posts! The Serenity shot in your photo dump was gorgeous (and serene!). I would love to be able to communicate in another language. I did, early on, study Latin, which is very much incorporated into English ~ just like Greek is. I tried to teach my kiddos common Greek and Latin root words to help them with their vocabulary development. Kuddos to your parents for sending to you to Greek school after school. Have a lovely weekend, Martha!

    1. It was wonderful learning Greek. It's always nice when parents pass on a language that that they speak, regardless of whether their kids will use it often or not. Speaking more than one language is a good thing. And if you never use it, so what?

  6. I think what was special about Morris is that he was so not remarkable for a cat, though all cats are remarkable.

    Have a nice weekend, Martha.

  9. When I was little and heard the Morris commercials I would come running to watch. If I was already watching I felt total joy that the commercial came on.

Love the "Save the dungeon for you"!

Only a true Crazy Cat Lady would take a cat to the beach.

I also loved the Meow Mix song.

Back then I always had a cat. My first was Gigi, then Blackie, Kitty, Polo and lastly Rita. I think it's time to consider another. Thanks Martha for the trip down memory lane.
