Hometown Memories: Flying Through The Clouds

I took my first airplane ride in 1972. It was the most fascinating experience of my young life, particularly when we flew through the clouds. They looked like cotton, and I wondered if they felt that way, too. I wanted to reach out the window and touch them, but of course we weren’t allowed.

I was only seven at the time, and had no understanding of how airplanes worked technically. Nor did I care. That’s the beauty of being a child. You don’t always need to question everything. The sun comes up every day. Clouds don’t fall down from the sky. Airplanes fly. Everything just is. And that’s good enough.

My first plane ride took us to Greece, which was another fascinating experience.
I'm on the left, my aunt is next to me, my mom is in the middle and my brothers are on the right.

I’ve taken quite a few airplane rides since then, some of them more enjoyable than others. And although I started to question their functionality as I got older, each subsequent plane ride was just as fascinating as my first one. I still want to reach out the window and touch the clouds. Flying is truly one of the greatest inventions of all time.

Have you ever flown in an airplane? When was your first time?

  1. My first was when I was about 8. My younger sister screamed through the entire flight and I was mortified.
I am so old that I believe the plane had propellers!

  3. Hey, Martha! I love that photo of you with your family in Greece. It must have been so exciting. One of these days I'm going to make it to Greece!
My first plane ride was from Halifax to Charlottetown, and I couldn't have been more than 4 or 5. I fell in love with the clouds too! I always try to get a window seat so I can watch the geology below, and mentally play in the clouds above. I used to love coming out of "Thunder Alley" in Florida. You'd fly through big, stormy cumulous and rock and roll! I haven't been flying in Florida for a few years though! Then we were flying United, and I could listen to the pilots on Channel 9. As long as they were calm, I was calm, no matter how much we shook going through the clouds.

    1. I also love sitting by the window to watch the geology below. It's very fascinating, isn't it? No matter how old I get there are things that leave me in awe. You were only 4 or 5? That is an amazing experience for a child that young!

  4. My dad was a pilot, so I rode in small airplanes from a very young age. He was also a flight instructor, so I got a few flying lessons during my teenage years. (Found out I liked flying more than the actual operation of the aircraft!) Didn't get to experience a commercial flight until I was in college. Still love to fly and airports always make me giddy with excitement.

    1. You got flying lessons? Sounds like so much fun! Like you, airports make me giddy with excitement. Perhaps my first experience on an airplane from such a young age left me with a permanently good feeling.

My most favorite plane trip took me to Denmark with an excursion to Spain in the summer of '74.

  6. My first plane ride was when I was around 12 years old. I flew from Halifax to Toronto to visit my sister who lived there. I got 'air sick' and held the vomit bag close by all the way!! I did enjoy at times and was amazed how high up we were.
As I got older flying has had less appeal to me for 2 reasons: I get really 'phobic' about it and have had a couple of bad experiences relating to airplane policy and lousy personnel.
I will fly again but it will have to be an exceptional circumstance. The train is better!!

    1. That is a terrible experience, Jim! And yet, you found moments to enjoy the experience. I love traveling by train, too, and actually prefer it. But unfortunately, the train just doesn't get us everywhere.

  8. You do something we should do more often and that is look at something through the eyes of a child. it's enlightening. My first flight was in 1963 and it was scary.

  9. I didn't fly for the first time until I was in college (1986), but it had the same effect. going through the clouds for the first time is a bit mystical - no matter what age you are

    1. Yes, it certainly is a little mystical, no matter the age! It's quite fascinating, when you stop and think about it, that we can fly in the air.

  10. Imagine going to Greece at such a young age - actually I can't imagine going at all, as I have never been! I'm afraid I don't like flying, Martha. Prefer to keep my feets on the ground! :)

    1. I prefer ground travel, too, Francie. If only it could take me everywhere! Ever since I discovered traveling by train, I've been in love with it.
