My Daughter’s Dedication To Animal Welfare

"People who say that 'money can't buy happiness' have never paid an adoption fee."

My daughter contacted me earlier this week to email her a better quality version of an image I had taken of her cat, Daeny; a beautiful female calico that she adopted from a local shelter right here in Kingston when she stayed with us for a couple of months in 2012. (Adoption story here.)

My daughter's beautiful cat, Daeny. (This is not the image my daughter requested.)

She’s using the image for a banner she’s designing for the cat rescue that she volunteers at. She and her boyfriend foster cats, and she attends the adoption days that the rescue organizes to help find ‘furever’ homes for all the sweet furballs in foster care.

Right now, this precious calico in her care is waiting for a permanent placement:

This sweet female kitten is hoping for a furever home. Might it be you?

Throughout their young lives, I taught my children to be gentle and compassionate and charitable with animals. Thankfully, the lessons were absorbed, and now that my older daughter is living on her own she has taken it even further by actively participating in animal welfare.

Daeny and the kitten are best buddies.

It is gratifying to know that with so many people dedicated to abusing, abandoning and neglecting the helpless and vulnerable creatures we share this world with, my daughter is dedicated to helping them. My heart is full.

Wishing you all a beautiful weekend!

    1. It was so important to me to raise kids that cared about animals. We definitely need young people like that...and people of ALL ages like that. Perhaps the next generation will do much better in this world.

  5. The cats are beautiful! It is sweet of your daughter to take care of them. We have an animal shelter near us with about 100 cats. The ladies at the shelter take good care of them, but it is sad to see so many without a good home!

  11. It's easy to see she is a very compassionate and caring human being, and she had the perfect example at home, you must feel so warm by how lovely your daughter is and I hope that her campaign to get cats adopted is a major success, she's so needed Martha, and it's thanks to you and your wonderful warmth and care that she is the woman she is today, so a hug for her on behalf of all lost cats who have no home, tell her I think she's as wonderful and caring as her mom is. Have a great weekend sweetie

  12. Thanks, Martha. I needed that, especially after reading about the Quebec government's inaction on that horrible fur farm. It's good to know there are kind people raising kind children.

    1. I know...horrible. I just can't understand it. Quebec already has such a horrible reputation when it comes to animal welfare. You'd think they'd want to do better. It was so important to me that my kids grow up compassionate towards animals. I worked hard on that.

  15. You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals or children.
Also, that first photo of the cat, that could win an award, I mean it, it is really, really good.

    1. Thanks, Kay! Daeny is a beautiful cat and the camera loves her. I really enjoy photographing her.

I always get an idea of what people are like by the way they treat the vulnerable: animals, children, elderly folks.

  18. So wonderful! There are so many cats that need a home - so glad she is able to help out. Adult cats need love and care - and are equally loving and caring. You don't have to raise them from kittens to have a bond. I hope the cats in the cat rescue get adopted into loving homes.

    1. Adult cats are wonderful, Jen, and I was so happy when my daughter's first cat when she moved on her own was an adult, female calico. And that kitty has turned out to be exceptional! The sweetest, most loving cat I've run across in a long time.
