And So The School Year Begins...

My daughter and some of her friends got together yesterday evening because school starts today.

“To celebrate the last day of summer break?” I asked.

“To mourn it” she answered.

Oh.

*grin*

Well, I can’t say I feel the same. Personally, I’m thrilled that school starts today. Summers are long, and the kids eventually get bored. Restless. And dare I say it? Annoying. Oops...I said it!

Did you like school when you were attending? I did. I loved everything about it in elementary school. So much so that when I missed a day, I cried a river of tears. With the exception of fever-induced delirium, there’s no way I could be kept home.

And even though I didn’t like all the academic stuff in high school, I loved the social aspects of it, and used to look forward to its return after a lengthy summer.

Around mid August I would begin feeling very excited about the upcoming first day of classes; a highly anticipated event. And when that day finally arrived, I practically floated to school.

I still get keyed up this time of year even though it’s been a long time since I was a student. The arrival of a new school year brings back so many childhood memories, and I reminisce about my school days; carefree and innocent times.

Those were the days, I tell you, and I’d go back and do it all over again if I could.

Did you like school?

    1. I loved school, and if I could go back and do it again, I would. So many cool things about it. I appreciate it even more as I get older. I was in a rush to finish back then, and now I wish it had gone slower.

Yup, I have your new blog on my blogroll!

  3. I did love school and loved learning ... I had some good friends back in high school ...those were the good ole days ...my mom was a teacher and I followed in her footsteps and became a teacher ...
My mom instilled in me the love of learning ... she was one of the best teachers I have ever known ...
I saw some kids get on a school bus a few days ...one of the little girls waved to me ...it brought back memories of my days heading off to school on the big yellow school bus ...school started here in August ... around the 12th, I think .. I know a lot of kids don't like going back that early but they get out in May . Yay to school ...

    1. I bet you were a great teacher, Margie! That profession seems so fitting for someone like you who is so kind and thoughtful.

The start of a new school year brings back a lot of heartwarming memories for many of us. Those were the days...

  4. I remember when I had 4 children in the same school. The youngest in Kindergarten, the oldest in grade 8. I was always so ready for summer, being burned out from schedules and structure... but by mid August, I was very ready to welcome a little structure back again. Youngest is starting University on Thursday, a whole new journey for him. When I was young, I did not like school. I did like high school and college, but my elementary days were tough. My children enjoyed there school days though, and that made me happy. When I was a child I practically lived in my imagination, and real-life got in the way. :)

    1. 4 kids would certainly keep you busy! I only had two and that seemed like quite a job. I've always enjoyed the summer season with the kids; it's nice to take a break from the schedule, but like you, by mid August I'm ready for that structure.

  5. That is all pretty funny stuff. Did you ever see the Staples commercial way back when the dad is sorta dancing his cart around the store, and the song over the loud speakers is, "It's the most wonderful time of the year."

I'm not sure if I remember it correctly but something along those lines and the kids are following behind only the kids are not happy.

    Good stuff.

    1. Yes, I LOVE that commercial. I posted it on my blog this time last year. And even though I've seen it 100 million times (give or take a few million :), I still laugh out loud! 'Cause that could be me in that commercial! LOL...

  6. Our teachers are striking here with no return in the foreseeable future. That said, my daughter is profiting quite nicely and babysitting.

  8. Yup the school bus passed this morning at 8am full of kids and on it's way to collect more up the street ! I liked school both elementary and high school ! I went to a big public school in the country Caledon Central Public in Caledon Ontario for the first 8 years the only thing I didn't like about going to school was leaving all my animal friends back on the farm but was sure glad to see them when I got home then to a small town for high school ! Thanks for sharing , Have a good day !

  9. As a parent, I was always happy for the first day of school. I liked the return to schedules and routine. Now both my kids are grown and on their own, so I've kind of lost track of the school calendar.

    1. That'll happen to me in a few years. One of my daughters finished university last year, so one child is done. The younger daughter is only seventeen, and in her last year of high school, so there are a few years to go. But not that many!

  10. I never liked school after grade 6. I had THE BEST teacher that year who was kind and thoughtful towards ALL her students.
Funny thing....I was a teacher for 30 years! lol Thought I could make a difference and change 'the system' a little to make it more appealing to more than just the few students who loved it. Most didn't.
I hope some major changes are in store for the educational system in this country.
The comics were great and spot on!

    1. I bet you did make a difference, Jim. Sometimes we need to get older to truly appreciate what school was all about, and the teachers who worked hard for us.

  12. At times I liked school and for different reasons. I only attended about 150 days a year. Many days were to work on the family farm. Winter days sometimes closed the school.

    1. 150 days! I can think of many friends back then that would have loved that.

  15. LOL! The best was the last says this retired elementary teacher! Actually, I was always excited about the start of the school year. Just a couple of weeks ago I ran into my old teammate among the stacks and shelves of new school supplies in Walmart. We were drawn to them like moths to a flame. The start of the school year has always felt like the real beginning of the year for me, much more so than New Year's Day. I'm a total nerd ~ I loved the academics in high school, university, and beyond! I hope that you are enjoying your weekend, Martha!

    1. Hahaha...hanging around the school supply sections, are we? Well, it makes sense; that's for sure. I feel the same way, Louise; that the start of the year begins when the school year begins. It's probably because I still have one kid in school. Maybe when she's done, I'll feel differently. Who knows?
