Staying Sane In A World Filled With Madness

Yesterday I spent the day cleaning out tons of paperwork that was stored in a filing cabinet. It’s not the most exciting chore, but I enjoyed doing it because I was completely disconnected from the world during that period. Something I need to do every so often because I’m the type of person that keeps well informed about what’s happening around the globe. And this exhausts me. Because there’s so much crap going on all the time.

Greed. Hate. Cruelty. Exploitation. Destruction. Theft. Deception. Inconsideration. Rudeness. Manipulation. Corruption. Violence. UGH! As I get older I become more and more sensitive to all this negativity, particularly the pain and suffering that we cause the animals, many of which are headed to extinction because of us. What a rotten species we can be. Rotten. And barbaric. I often ask myself how I manage to stay sane in all this madness.

So, as a result of overloaded senses, I was in need of a break to recharge. It helped because I’m feeling better this morning. More like my usual self: optimistic and upbeat. There are good people in this world, I remind myself. Good people doing great things. And making changes. People with love in their heart.

Speaking of which, I’m ending the week with a video about love that will make you smile. When our heart is filled with love, there's no room for hate, and that makes for a better world.

Wishing you all a beautiful weekend. Remember to be kind.

  1. I'm glad you were able to regain your perspective. The world is a terrible place and wonderful. People even more so. It's not always easy to keep your equilibrium in all that.

  5. Sweet music video--the nutella heart really made me smile ;) Cleaning out desks, paperwork, and closets does give me a good feeling when its done, getting rid of unneeded "stuff!"

You are right, news can be so upsetting. Reading news articles is the perfect way for me to get upset; some people are just .so. sick. I'd much rather be reading blogs like yours and enjoying beautiful photos... The world is cruel, but you brighten my day!

  6. Yeah, I try not to watch the news because it seems like it's filled with negative stories. I don't need that in my life.

  8. Oh my god, I can so relate to your sentiments. I despair of the human race at the best of times. But I suspect you know that already. And as much as I 'try' to see the good in others, my heart sinks every time I turn on the TV, the internet, or browse the local newspaper. The world is indeed filled with madness.

But, like you, I must remind myself that there are good people. You being one of them. Have a great weekend, Martha. Love from Down Under and Off to the Side :)

    1. I do know that already, and we are so much alike. I try to keep upbeat and optimistic as much as I can, because there truly are a lot of good people in this world. But since the media feeds us nothing but negativity, it's very hard to keep a positive outlook. That's why I disconnect sometimes and recharge. And also why I spend a lot of time outdoors when the weather is good. Connecting with nature puts a different (and more positive) perspective on life.

  9. There is lots of good here, lots of good people, as well. But I think, with all the muck being shown, many don't see it.

    1. You got it, Wonder Woman. We are drowning in the muck. I have to shovel my away out of it sometimes just to keep my head above. But I truly believe there is more good than bad.

    2. I agree. But the bad gets hits and views and all that muck.

  10. It's not just life we have to be concerned about but the whole planet. We are quickly getting to a point where we've done serious damage to the planet.

  11. Last week I made a commitment to myself that I will not watch any news or read any newspapers until January. Because it is getting to be to much. My brain is tired and because I already sit teetering on the edge of depression I have to be very aware of "what goes in must come out". As I try to eat well and stay away from the junk, I also have to focus on Light and Love and stay away from darkness and hate.

    1. Good for you, girl! You do what you have to do to stay afloat. As for me, I just need to disconnect once in awhile. I can take huge doses of crap but know when I've reached my max.

  12. I think a lot of people have to realize that often good news isn't considered real news. At least to those who report it.

  13. Martha, you hit the nail right on the head!
Back in 1973 (geez you were barely born!!!) I was taking my B.Ed degree at Acadia U in Wolfville, N.S.
One day were learning all about behavior modification techniques.
The 'king' back then on this topic was Leo Buscaglia. I will never forget his most famous quote:
    "Love is the behavior modifier."
It does and can make everything better and peaceful.

    1. That is absolutely right, Jim! Love makes everything better. If only everyone was enveloped in that. I'm sure we'd all get along much better, and there would be more peace in this world.

  14. What a happy and spirit-lifting video, Martha! It is hard to remain optimistic when media negativity is everywhere, but then I'll run into someone kind and thoughtful, and that makes everything better. Just flashing a big smile at someone on a street can change that person's day. Be kind ~ words to live by! Take care! Hugs and love coming your way! XOXOX

    1. Thanks, Louise! Hugs and love from all the way over there! That makes me smile. Yes, it certainly is hard to remain optimistic, but like you say, you bump into great people all the time, which puts things in a different - and happier - perspective. I also search online for stories of unsung heroes. There are so SOOO many out there. And that really does it for me. Hope your weekend is a happy one!

  15. Everybody, everybody wants to love....oh oh oh... I'm humming while writing. I love the song. Thank you.
I stopped reading news for it brainwashes me that nothing good in the world is happening anymore. I refuse to believe it. I focused instead on people and things that makes me still belive that life is beautiful and the world is a place to enjoy it. Kindness in the thing I miss the most. I feel that the world is running out of it but I continue to believe that it just there lying in every human's heart, sometimes concealed with many others which the demands of. I like your blog really, I always leave with a positive thought after visiting :)
