...you remember what this was used for:
And you're definitely around my age if you ever used one.
Here's a hint for the young'uns:
Go ahead, take a guess. If you get it right, you win a moldy piece of cheese, a sweaty sock and three pieces of chewed-up bubble gum. (I think Wonder Woman will approve of these prizes.)
Have a wonderful day, everyone!
I even remember the sound it would make as they pushed the top part back and forth over your credit card! Very distinctive.
ReplyDeleteHa. That's exactly what I remembered - Ka-shuck - Ka-shuck.
DeleteFor sure! Years of listening to the sound of these machines is sealed in my mind forever :)
DeleteI still see these being used from time to time.
ReplyDeleteReally? That is so interesting. I haven't seen one in years!
DeleteIt's a scanner? Pleeeeease tell me I didn't win anything :-)
ReplyDeleteLike they would say in war movie: Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarge!
Hahaha... You are answering but pretending not to. What...you don't like the prizes?
DeleteFor credit cards :) I remember my first credit card and watching the charge go through :) So much more different these days!
ReplyDeletebetty
It certainly is different now. And so much faster, too!
DeleteI used to see those all the time in cartoons and old tv shows. I saw one in person about five years ago believe it or not. A pizza place's card reader went out and they took out that old thing.
ReplyDeleteI bet it helped with their payments since their card reader went out. Or how else would they have handled it?
DeleteYup I remember them had to use them in my jobs lol. haven't seen one in years my how the times change . Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteYes, times have certainly changed. And payments are much different.
DeleteYou had me on that one--don't think I'll be winning any prizes (but that might not be a bad thing!)
ReplyDeleteHahaha...yes, that might not be a bad thing!
DeleteOh yea, gotta love those credit card machines. And, when they gave you your receipt, the blue carbon paper would get all over your purchases in the bag.
ReplyDeleteThat's right! And all over your hands eventually.
DeleteI am not sure if I've seen one of that being used.
ReplyDeleteI guess that's possible!
DeleteYep. I used one of those. I am actually surprised how many people didn't know what it was. Am I that old?
ReplyDeleteIf you are, then so am I. And I'm older than you, too!
DeleteOh, that definitely brings back memories.....I used these during some of my college years jobs.
ReplyDeleteI think those of us around my age and older have some type of experience with this!
DeleteOh my word, I still have one of those "Knuckle Busters" in a cabinet somewhere - just couldn't bring myself to throw it away. lol
ReplyDeleteBTW, I was at a restaurant not long ago and they lost their connection so could not swipe people's credit cards. They had to use a pen to write out each transaction and would have given their eye-teeth for one of those old swipers. :)
We laugh at those old relics but in desperate times they prove to be quite useful! LOL...
DeleteI remember the pinched fingers from using one of those :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes! That was a side effect :)
DeleteI thought they still used them!!!
ReplyDeleteI bet there are some places that still do!
DeleteYes, I know the nature center I volunteer at uses one or tries to use it.
DeleteAnd when there's a modern technology glitch, there are places that wish they still had one around!
DeleteThat's not that old! In places with no internet connection (like a surprising amount of rural Canada), they still use them. You need to get out into the back corners of the country more. (Just kidding, but lots of people I know still just have dial-up access. It's a different world out here!)
ReplyDeleteI guess you're right! I haven't seen one in years but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I'm sure they are still used!
DeleteLike many mentioned, its not the machine but the sound it makes that lingers on in memory.
ReplyDeleteYou got it! That's what I remember most.
DeleteAh yes, the ole "knuckle grinder!"
ReplyDeleteHahaha...that's a great way to put it!
DeleteiNDEED the whole mastercard-visa whatchyoumightcallit thingy...and yes I will take the moldy piece of cheese, because you know it gets better as it gets older you just chop off the mold....besides wouldn't that make it a piece of blue cheese? Good Girl .....lol
ReplyDeleteHahaha...yes, blue cheese! That's exactly what it is :)
DeleteOMG things have moved on haven't they !!!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
They sure have. So many changes!
DeleteOh my gosh, I love those prizes. So fun.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have a CC at this time but I recall my gram did, I think it was her. Now I don't know?
I knew you'd love those prizes. I imagined you placing a sticker on my forehead as approval :)
Deletehahahahahahaha
