The most important hint in the image is my daughter who as you all know will be heading to university in another city.
So what did we do on Saturday? Well, we drove to Ottawa in the morning to attend the summer orientation for new students; well worth the trip. We were provided with important information and advice about first-year university studies and an overview of the various services available. We even got a fantastic tour of the grounds. They also gave tours of the residences but because my daughter's is off campus, we drove to it on our own.
Specifically, this residence:
We didn't think we'd be allowed to see her place or any place for that matter but when we asked at the reception we were told we most certainly could. And the icing on the cake was that hers was available to view, albeit not thoroughly cleaned yet (they rent these residences as hotel rooms off season), which we didn't mind, so my daughter picked up the key and up we went to investigate.
It's a two-bedroom suite that my daughter, Alex, will be sharing with three other students (let's hope they get along) and we were pleasantly surprised at how lovely it is! Alex loves how spacious and attractive it is and where it's located (in the downtown area).
So...
Those of you who guessed that we were wandering the halls of a university student residence are correct! But we weren't helping her move in. Not yet. We'll be doing that next week and I will share more photos very soon. And the *sniff* emotions that will accompany her leaving home. So stay tuned.
Have a wonderful day, everyone!
These posts are bringing back memories for me. It was 40 years ago this week that I too left home for first-year university and life in a women's residence. The building's nickname was "Virgin Towers." I don't know whether it was meant to be descriptive or ironic, LOL!
ReplyDelete40 years! Isn't it amazing how time zips right by?
DeleteI had a good laugh with the nickname "Virgin Towers"! I'd place my money on 'ironic' :)
Looks like a wonderful place she'll be living at! Huge!!! Such exciting adventures for her about to begin!
ReplyDeletebetty
Indeed! It's a very exciting stage for her. I'm sure she'll love it.
DeleteHope she has a wonderful time!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope she does, too.
Deleteoh I remember those days, it is an emotional time.
ReplyDeleteIt really is. And very exciting, too!
DeleteHow exciting for both of you! I do hope that this transition is gentle on you.
ReplyDeleteIt is very exciting! I'm so happy for her. She'll have a great time.
DeleteSuper exciting stuff, Martha. And free? Holy cupcakes, Batman.
ReplyDeleteYes, super exciting! I'm so happy for my daughter. This is a great time in her life. And what do you mean by free??
DeleteOh, I think I know what you were referring to as free! I changed my wording. Her residence is not free as in free to live in. It was free as in unoccupied, so we could enter it and look around. There is definitely a fee for residency, along with university fees, etc.
DeleteOh, I thought the lady in the first photo was you!! Glad you got to see the residence!
ReplyDeleteI'm very happy we got a chance to see the residence. It gave my daughter a glimpse of where she'll be living, which in turn helps us plan her move more accordingly.
DeleteCongrats on your daughter entering a new stage in her life (and to you the proud parents!)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda! Lots of excitement around here.
DeleteShe won't be that far away, Martha.....chin up!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Linda :o)
For sure, Linda. I'm actually very excited about this. She will really enjoy living in Ottawa!
DeleteYou are blessed she is taking her education seriously.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely blessed! I'm so happy she's continuing her education. Her older sister finished university last year, so both my girls are making me proud!
DeleteWonderful!
ReplyDelete:)
It is!
DeleteIt does look a very nice place where your daughter will be staying ... they grow up all too soon.
ReplyDeleteThere will be mixed emotions from all.
Hope your week is going well.
All the best Jan
PS hope you enjoyed the glass of Pinot I virtually poured and sent over for you LOL
Hahaha...yes, I certainly did enjoy the virtual glass of Pinot! Thank you so much :)
DeleteA big life change for the whole family. Take care.
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment :)
DeleteI can imagine how emotional and sentimental is this moment, I guessed wrong, geesh no socks for moi, sigh
ReplyDeleteIt is, Lorraine. I am very excited. My daughter will really love her time in Ottawa. Such a great city to be studying in.
DeleteI live in a city with a few colleges next to another one with a few more. Not many people I knew actually stayed in a dorm, most of them lived at home. I knew one girl who wanted to go to college in Florida just to get away from her family.
ReplyDeleteMy wife's brother went to a college about 1.5 hours away and her parents paid his rent in a shared apartment. That lasted a year before they realized how much cheaper it was for him to go to school 15 minutes away. His first 4-year college was University of South Carolina, but the one right next of us is the University of South Carolina-Upstate. So at least since it was technically the same school but a different campus, he didn't have a messy transfer of going one college to another
Sounds like it worked out great for your brother-in-law. It's great to be able to stay home when you attend college/university. You can save a lot of money like that.
DeleteDefinitely going to be difficult with the 'move'! Happy all are pleased with the residence.
ReplyDeleteWe have friends heading out in a couple of days as well with their daughter to Waterloo for her first year there.
This must be hard to experience.....glad in a way I was spared this.
It is in a way, Jim, because it suddenly dawns on you just how grownup they are. But it's also very exciting. My daughter is the first in our family to go away fro university and I think she'll really enjoy it. Ottawa is a beautiful city with so much to see and do, and she'll have a great time.
