When I was a kid, I was slightly picky, although not overly so. My mother cooked a lot of different – and oftentimes interesting, if not eccentric – foods, so my brothers and I experienced some adventurous dining.
In my older years, I enjoy trying new things, especially if the smell or texture is appealing. But I do know where to draw the line. Because even though I’m not a picky eater, I am a cautious one. There are some things that simply gross me out, which I won’t get into right now since I’m just about to have breakfast!
What about you? Are you a picky eater?
I wouldn't say I am, but like you, I know what I don't like, and I don't eat it.
ReplyDeleteAnd no one can force us! One of those foods I cannot stand is okra. Bleh...
DeleteGood for you! :D You know what's right!
DeleteHmmm, I would say I'm a moderately picky eater. I have my likes and dislikes. But I do notice my palate has been changing as I age and I now enjoy things I would never have touched as a kid.
ReplyDeleteI totally get that, Debra, cause I'm pretty much the same way. A few of the foods I wouldn't touch as a kid I eat now because I cook them differently from the way my mom did. Sometimes that's all it takes to enjoy something you never did before.
DeleteI'm not really a picky eater, I just have my personal favorites which I prefer to eat most of the time. :)
ReplyDeleteNow, things have changed. I started eatings dishes which I won't be forced to eat as a kid. Part of aging? :)
Could be. Apparently our taste changes as we get older.
DeleteTexture is very important to me when it comes to food. If it is slimy I will probably have a problem with it.
ReplyDeleteBut generally I will try just about anything, Martha.
My mom was very adventurous as well in her food preparation.....much to the chagrin of some of her kids!!
Texture is my thing, too, Jim. And slimy is something that makes me gag!
DeleteI avoid what I don't like also to eat.
ReplyDeleteNice and simple!
DeleteI am not picky and enjoy different things although it took me about 3visits to enjoy sushi, the raw kind.
ReplyDeleteThat is great, Christine. You are an adventurous eater. I tried sushi for the first time this spring at a wedding we attended. It was far better than I expected.
DeleteI am definitely not picky and quite adventurous, as are my kids. I think it's because my Mom was lazy and so am I. She never made kids' food and neither did I. When I was a kid, I had to eat what my parents ate or I didn't eat. Same with my kids. They ate what we cooked or they went hungry. No separate kid friendly meals 'cause I didn't have time for that.
ReplyDeleteThat is definitely a way for kids to try new things! One meal for everyone.
DeleteLOL, I wish I was a picky eater; I might be 30 pounds less in weight :) I pretty much will eat anything and lots of it :) There are a few things that I won't eat but the list is rather small I fear :)
ReplyDeletebetty
Sounds like you have a great taste palette. And a wonderful sense of humour :)
DeleteCooked green leafy things scare the hell out of me! LOL Have a good one, Martha!
ReplyDeleteHahaha...that's funny, Louise :)
DeleteNot a picky eater. The only foods I don't like are black licorice. parsnips and turnips and bananas. I will eat a banana with peanut butter sometimes.
ReplyDeleteFrom you list, the black licorice is the one I won't touch! I really can't stand the flavour. The rest are not favourites but I could handle them.
DeleteWe were not allowed to be picky. "You will clean your plate before you leave this table and be glad you have it. There are starving kids in China" I wondered one time if we could ship them the English peas but I dared not say it aloud. Being picky was not a choice when I was a child.
ReplyDeleteWe were reminded of starving kids around the world, too. And I used to wonder how stuffing my belly helped them. Show me how to send them the food!
DeleteYes. Yes. And yes. Growing up, I had to eat whatever was on my plate but when I got old enough to choose I realized that some people can eat anything and love everything. That is not me. I like certain things the way I like them and that's that. I have how ever evolved and there are some things I enjoy now that I didn't growing up like tomatoes, fish, onions and broccoli.
ReplyDeleteThe beauty of being a grownup...we eat whatever we like! And our taste changes over time, so we drop or adopt certain foods.
DeleteAhh, come on, Martha, you have to tell us what they are now!! :D
ReplyDeleteNope. Not sharing, Francie! Okay, maybe just a few. I would never eat oysters, mussels, snails. Never. Just the thought makes me sick!
DeleteI'm not a picky eater. Dad made us "clean up our plates" when we were kids. That's another problem as you learn to not be a picky eater.
ReplyDeleteSome families were like that. You didn't waste food!
DeleteAt one time, yes. I was, but then I opened up to everything and had a blast. Now that I am sick however, my options are limited but on the upside, they are limited to the things that I love the most.
ReplyDeleteWhich might not really answer your question but it's hard for me to answer when I am only able to eat a small list of goodies.
No need to explain further. I totally get it. Your list of foods you eat would be longer if you weren't sick. Makes total sense! But at least you are enjoying foods you love.
DeleteIt's not really picky. I just eat what I want and don't eat what i don't want. I hate Brussel sprouts so I don't eat them.
ReplyDeleteMakes total sense. Up until recently I'd never eaten brussel sprouts because I was sure I wouldn't like them. I discovered that when they're prepared with a tasty sauce, I actually like them.
DeleteChickpeas....that's it! won't eat it..nuh hun no way
ReplyDeleteI get the feeling you don't like chickpeas, Lorraine. :)
DeleteI'm not a picky eater... as long as I get food I like LOL
ReplyDeleteYou're a man who knows what he wants :)
DeleteI grew up in a family of very close-minded, picky eaters but after some travel abroad and living out on my own I've clawed my way up to "cautious" eater ;) I even eat sauerkraut and pickles now! Still not a lot of fish and fatty cuts of meat make me gag but it's progress...
ReplyDeleteThe hubs will try to push my boundaries and complains sometimes about my "narrow palate" but I'm the sort that is okay with eating the same stuff over and over, just as I can watch the same shows over and over, very into my comfort zones. He's more of a constant explorer type so we push and pull and when he needs his comfort foods he appreciates the fact that I'm an excellent pot pie/biscuits 'n gravy/lasagna/meatloaf maker and when I am feeling adventurous I appreciate his nose for good, new eats!
That said we are both trying to learn to love raw tomatoes and he's still trying to get comfortable with raw onions. I guess everyone has their boundaries, right?
Sounds like you and your hubby are a good fit. He encourages you to try new things and you remind him that those comfort foods are sometimes the most desirable! Win-win.
