Hometown Memories: A Favourite Holiday Tune

I really enjoy the festive music this time of year. And I do have some favourites. One of them I discovered in a Christmas television special that was produced in 1968. The song, which is also the title of this TV classic, is "The Little Drummer Boy".

Every year I looked forward to watching this show with my brothers mainly for this song and I also looked forward to singing it in school during the Christmas celebrations.

Years later, it continues to be a top choice for me. And who can sing it better than Bob Seger?

Whenever I hear 'The Little Drummer Boy', I travel back in time to many wonderful childhood memories.

Do you like any holiday tunes?

  1. Cute post Martha! Oh you know I love Christmas/Holiday music and I have about 40 hours on my pc! I love mainly the traditional music, but there have been a few new holiday songs in the past couple years that I really love. One being, Believe, from the Polar Express movie. It is performed by Josh Groban. Have a great week Martha! ~ Diane

  3. Ah - I remember all those specials too. I don't tend to watch them anymore - they make me sad - but love the new specials / movies that have replaced them in my yule season. :)

  4. My favorite of this song is the David Bowie and Bing Crosby's version. I can't get enough of it to this day. Great post. Great song!

  6. My kids just heard Little Drummer Boy the other day and I was trying to explain the story to them, and also the difference between the bits of the Christmas story that Christians actually believe happened and the bits (like the drummer boy story) that were added later but aren't part of the Bible. It can be a tricky distinction for kids, when they see Frosty the Snowman etc.

    1. It can be tricky. But once they understand, these are fun shows.

  11. I'm not sure I watched this one...but my mom said It's a Wonderful Life was my favorite movie as a child and I didn't even remember watching it until I was in high school. I don't even trust my memories anymore!

  13. Christmas carols are great. Have you heard the Sean Quigley version of The Little Drummer Boy? Look it up on youtube, it is a modern version but very good.

    1. Yes, of course! Blogging pal (Debra - commenting above) shared his version on her blog and I loved it. And he's a Canadian, too. More reason to love his version :)

  15. My favourite Christmas tune is 'Oh Holy Night'. It brings back memories of my favourite Christmas concert in school....grade 6. A classmate sang it and stunned everybody there. He was, let's say, 'a little rough around the edges, and nobody expected to hear what came out of his mouth. It was quite moving. Something changed in me that evening.....I looked at people a little differently ever since. Thanks George.

    1. Sometimes people surprise you, don't they? It reminds us that we shouldn't judge so quickly.
