Taking Care Of Those Pearly Whites

Last week I had a dentist's appointment. I go regularly to keep these pearly whites in good shape, so I can have teeth to chew my food with in my old age. Like pizza. Can't go through life without being able to eat pizza.

In my younger years I didn't like going to the dentist but I don't mind anymore. My experiences at the dental office have been very pleasant in the past few years. The cleanings are quick and pain free, and  I am in no doubt that brushing and flossing daily are major contributes to this. Especially the flossing.

There was a time that I didn't floss every day and those cleanings were much more difficult. "I'm too busy to floss. I don't have time" I would tell the dental hygienist.  But that's just not true. It takes me no more than 20 seconds to floss my teeth. 20 seconds.

So I'm one of those people that doesn't lie about flossing. I actually do it. And it's made those dental appointments very easy to attend.

Do you mind going to the dentist?

My experience I'd say for 90% of the visits have been fine/ok/bearable/phew it's over!!
In 2007, Sophie and I were trekking along the beach and she found a dead fish. I, for some reason, thought that flying over to stop her from eating it was the appropriate move. I actually jumped in the air and proceeded to fly over rocks landing on them and I had what I believe to this day was a knock out punch for a period of time as I lay on the rocks. I finally came to, with Sophie standing over me. I do believe she realized her error in judgement along with my error in judgement too.
Long story short, I cracked my tooth. It took me a year and half to figure this out and finally had to have it removed in 2009. It was horrendous/painful/anxiety ridden and to this day that is what slaps me in the face even if I know I'm just going to have a cleaning.
So, in a nutshell ~ dentist visits are not my choice of joy anymore!!!

    1. Eeeeek! Sounds awful. No wonder the very thought of a visit to the dentist is so unfavourable. A traumatizing experience like that really affects how we feel about those visits. I'm glad you were okay. I imagine Sophie was quite worried. Dogs are so sensitive to things like that!

  3. I never use to but somewhere along the way the price has become unbelievable...thing is I have insurance but first I must pay them and then get reiumbersed, I don't have any money left on credit cards or anywhere else...but I don't feel any pain, so far, so good.

    1. Dentists can be so expensive. We have insurance through my husband's work but once he retires...that's another story.

  4. Dentists scare the hell out of me. I get in the chair and the tears start to flow. It is a fear right down to the bone.

    1. That must be so hard. Did anything really traumatic happen in the past that has made you feel this way?

  6. I don't think any of us enjoy a visit to the dentist ... but it is important to go.
It is also important to do our bit and look after our teeth.

I did enjoy your cartoons too!

    All the best Jan

  7. Martha, one can always 'blend up' the pizza!! lolEWWWWW!
As a kid I hated dentist appts! I even ran out of the office once and down the street with my older sister chasing after me.
I am a bit better. I compare a visit to the dentist with flying on an airplane....both make me VERY STRESSED.
And my dentist and hygienist are the nicest people too.

  9. Wow what a story about how you chipped your tooth! I can say that I find it so impressive that you actually floss every day. I have never flossed as much as I should and still do not to this day. I'm always embarrassed when i tell my dentist that I floss less than once a week.

  10. It always amazes me when I hear people state that they do not have enough time to go the dentist or to care for their teeth properly. Glad you came around and do not mind going anymore. A happy and clean mouth can actually keep you healthy for many years.

  11. I have to agree with you 100% about flossing. It can really make your next trip to the dentist more enjoyable. I had lost my insurance and stopped going to the dentist for a few years. I made sure to floss everyday and when I did go back he told me that the flossing actually saved me from serious gum disease.
