Feeling Hot Hot Hot

Ah, the dog days of summer. We've been getting our fair share over here. It's been very hot and humid for quite some time now. The city has issued heat health warnings to all residents, but particularly to more vulnerable ones like the elderly, infants, young children, individuals working outside, people with chronic illnesses, etc. I think they should include menopausal women. Because extreme heat on top of hot flashes doesn't bode well for them...or for the people around them!

It's been quite extensive this hot spell and it wouldn't be that bad if only we'd get some rain now and again. But nope, no rain. None. It has been so dry for so long that gardens and lawns everywhere are struggling and really suffering. My own plants are barely managing. And I've lost a few that just couldn't deal with it anymore.

The most amazing man in the world and I have also been sleeping in my daughter's room in the basement for a few weeks now. When she moved out, she took the furniture from our spare bedroom instead of her own and this has turned out to be a blessing because we've got a bed to sleep on in a room that is wonderfully cool. So cool that you need a blanket. And because the foundation of our home is concrete, it is also very quiet. Cool, dark and silent; the ideal setting. I haven't slept this well in ages. It's no wonder she loved her room so much when she was here.

So we have been dealing with extreme heat and extreme dryness. If you've got some rain to spare, send it right over!

And speaking of heat, here's a fun song from all the way back in the early 80s when I was oh-so much younger. Enjoy.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

  3. It was roasting here yesterday too--something like 95-97 F with enough humidity to make it feel 105. I was dripping with sweat when I tried to work in the garden. We had a little rain last night though, and it has cooled off to a most pleasant temperature.

    1. Rain is always fantastic when it gets that hot. Hopefully we'll get some soon because it's been much too long since the earth got a good soaking!

  4. Oh how I miss a basement to keep cool. We don't have those here in North Cackalacky 'cause we live at sea level. Dang, the folks in the AC business are makin' a killin' this time of year just puttin' Freon in all the AC units.

    1. Some of the stores around here are running the air conditioners at a minimum. You can hardly feel any coolness when you walk in. I imagine they are trying to keep costs down!

  5. Basements are wonderful for that very reason! Glad you guys are at least sleeping good during the hot times. Not getting a good night of sleep is rough on top of them facing dealing with the hot humid weather. I was surprised, though the weather people said we were done with this current round of monsoons, we got a thunder and lightening storm this morning with lots of rain. I hope you guys cool down soon and hopefully get some rain!

    1. We'd be happy to have some of that rain, Betty! Just send it right over :)
Thank goodness for our basement because no matter how long we run the air conditioner, the upper floor where our bedroom is located is always warmer than the rest of the house.

  6. Not been that hot here, in fact, I'm really cold right now. It is 68F in the house with the air on saver. Sorry to read about your plants but very cool on the cooler room at night.

Ha, to the melting cat. Good one.

    2. Wow. We had rain on Friday.

It's cooler here in part because we have several black walnut trees over the trailer.

  8. We were sweaty hot in mid-July (low 30s) but things have gotten more seasonal since then (mid 20s). Still not as hot and humid as you poor buggers down in central Canada though. Good thing you've got that basement bedroom!

  9. It's a little cooler in Jacksonville, Florida, this week. Only eighty-nine degrees today. This morning I went swimming for the first time this summer. Until now it's been too hot to even go to the pool.

    Love,

  10. Hi Martha! Great post!! I felt like that flat, fat melting cat the other day! It was so horribly humid like walking into a steam sauna! Just awful... but now after a big thunderstorm our weather has cooled, I'm pretty sure the cool air came from Canada, sorry you're getting cheated, but thank you! :)

  11. Oh can I relate to this. It has been really hot and humid where I am, and this menopausal woman does not like it one bit. Unfortunately my basement isn't much cooler.

  14. heat can get to you after a while. I was raised in a very dry part of the prairie. When we were putting up hay we worked day after day out in the dry heat.

Ah, menopause, so much fun isn't it. I've never had a hot flash during the day, but I get night sweats most nights. Do I get moody? Are you suggesting I get moody sometimes? Do you want a smack in the teeth?

  17. I am ready for something other than sweltering as well. We keep getting promises of rain but nothing yet. My garden is showing signs of distress and I have lost a number of plants. They always manage to come back though. As for menopause....it's just evil.

The bloody expensive AC is actually energy efficient :)

  21. Ugh, know all about heat. Bought mum home from the hospital in December in 42 degrees Celsius and we only have fans. We had to sleep in the lounge room and I had to put wet towels in the freezer and switch them out all night to keep her cool. blech, I hate heat and cold, rather have a nice 25 degrees all year round.
