Blogroll Cleanup

This morning I spent a little time cleaning up my blogroll on Blogger and on Bloglovin'. I use the latter to check for new posts on blogs I follow but I have lists on both. I unsubscribed from blogs that are no longer there, blogs that seem to be abandoned and blogs whose owners never followed or stopped following mine. How anyone can leave this lovely blog is beyond me, but alas, sometimes we are just not compatible. If you are a follower of mine and I've deleted your blog by mistake, please let me know!

Do you follow a lot of blogs? My list is not terribly long, and because not all of the sites I visit post often, it's fairly easy to keep up with all of them. Plus, I don't comment everywhere. I typically do that on blogs whose owners comment on my posts regularly. I consider these individuals blogging pals and I enjoy the exchange with them. Leaving comments can be fun but receiving them is even more so. People write the most interesting things sometimes. So, if you are a regular commenter here, you'll find me doing the same over at your place. If not, well, no need to explain...

Have I missed any of your blogs? Perhaps you are following privately or have never commented or there is no link to your blog from your profile picture on my 'followers' list. If that's the case, step forward and leave a comment below so that I can visit your blog, even follow it. Go ahead; don't be shy. We're a friendly bunch here!

Do any of you ever do blog cleanups? Do you enjoy leaving comments?

  1. I do follow a lot of blogs. Actually whenever I find a new blog, usually I follow it. And I usually don't unfollow the inactive blogs simply because I just forget about them since they stop showing up on my reading list! ;)

And maybe you are right, i shouldn't waste my time with blogs and bloggers that do not give back :)

    1. I try to keep my blog lists to a reasonable level, so I can visit the ones that are fairly active. It's so much easier for me that way.

  4. I enjoy reading lots of blogs, and do my best to leave a comment ... even if it's just hello!

I find that so often one blogging friend can lead to meeting another blogging friend and then another. 'Blogland 'can be a great place.

I always enjoy my visits to your blog and have really enjoyed your Project 366 - long may it continue - your photographs are always great to see.

    Happy Weekend

    All the best Jan

    1. It's always fun to leave comments and receive them. And I often click on profiles to see if the individual who left the comment has a blog. A great way to discover new ones!

  6. Yes, I have done several blog roll clear ups. I started blogging in 2009 and many people have stopped blogging, gone to Facebook, which I have also but don't like as well, or died. I have a bunch of new readers today, including you. Sometimes I think that the stuff I'm writing about is of no interest, so I appreciate your comments.

  8. I follow and comment on blogs that I enjoy reading and have an interest in what the blogger is saying generally.
My blogging had decreased from every day to three days a week due mainly to time constraints. But also due to FB. I find I can communicate more effectively with some people through this medium.
I have cleaned up my blog on occasion and there remains quite a few that I never look at or hear from and I admit it is probably due to the fact that I didn't keep up with them for whatever reason......mainly time limits. I have gotten busier since I initially started blogging 8 or 9 years ago when it was a valuable tool during my rehab from a brain injury. And for that I will forever be thankful.
I guess we all get into this blogging world for different reasons and with varied intentions as to how much and how involved we will become.
I for one am very happy that through this process, Martha, I have gotten the opportunity to 'meet' you.

  9. I've never actually counted how many blogs I follow. I'm always looking for more that appeal to me for whatever reason. I used to have a list that I kept in a folder back before Windows 10 messed up my world. I could still see that list but couldn't add to it, so then I stuck more in "favourites" on my computer. Just recently I took the time to create a list in Blogger which is now complete and easy to manage. I admit that there are blogs I read but don't comment on. Most of them, I do leave comments, but not always for each post. I feel the same as you, that these people are my blogging pals. -Jenn

    1. Blogging pals are great. I've met so many since I started blogging, many of which I've know for years. It's so much fun. I visit a lot of blogs but don't always comment, but do make an effort to say something now and again. I know that others enjoy receiving comments as much as I do!

  11. I do blog cleanups after the A to Z challenge since I will follow some more during that time, then do a general cleanup. I used to follow a lot of blogs but found some rarely or never commented back so I phased them out. I do like the friendships made through blogging and I like to leave comments as well as give them. Have a great Sunday!

  15. I follow around 130 blogs but just as you, I don't comment on a lot of them. I do, however, try to comment regularly on about 80 or so. The blogs that are more "diary" like where people are talking about their day etc., I find there isn't much to comment on. I occasionally just leave a comment to say "hi".

I need to go through my blogrolls as well but my Blogger reader has a glitch and doesn't allow me to delete the blogs I follow from my dashboard. I have to go to each blogs widget (the one that shows the little icons in a box) From there I can delete them. So the fact I am lazy keeps a number of blogs on the roll. Plus any of the blogs that are no longer visible because they are inactive, doesn't allow me to get to the Google followers widget.

I hope you never take me off your blogroll as I adore your comments. LOVE THEM!!!

    1. Most of the blogs I eliminated were dormant or blogs that I hadn't interacted with for ages. Some weren't even online anymore! I'm down to a much more manageable level now. I like visiting and commenting, but don't always have something to say. I do try to at least comment occasional on each blog I follow; some I comment all the time because we are blogging pals and it's like we visit with each other.

I don't plan to ever take you off my blogroll, Cheryl. In fact, I hope to meet you in person one day!

I do follow more blogs that I have followers...but I still follow them because they or their blogs are of interest to me.

  17. You have to occasionally clean up. It's a hard call to make when you unfollow a blog. It's hard to know about the silent followers like uncle Les. What I really appreciate is that you comment on my comments. It gets more like a conversation. I wish there was an easy way to part company.

    1. Most of the blogs I unsubscribed from seem to be abandoned, so it wasn't too difficult. The only other blogs I removed myself from were blogs that had ditched me along the way. I figured they didn't want to be associated anymore, so we can part ways peacefully. I really enjoy responding to comments because of the reason you give: it feels like a conversation!

  19. I follow around 20 or 30 blogs and occasionally do clean them up, if I no longer find them interesting or if they have stopped posting. I love when people read and comment on my blog but failure to do so doesn't mean I stop following them, it's not quid pro quo. And a couple of bloggers I follow have thousands of follows, they couldn't possibly follow everyone back. The first few bloggers I ever read now only blog a couple of times a year but I still hang on, I'm invested! It can be hard to keep commenting on blogs you've been reading for a while only because they are often saying the same things they have said before. For example you post your photos once a week and I love looking at them, but feel odd saying "great photos" every single time if I don't have something specific to say about one of them. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy them. Or a couple of people I follow are quite depressed a lot of the time and it's hard to find new ways to say "I hope things get better" every day. My own blog is a diary kind without any particular insights so I don't provoke much discussion, and that is ok. But I still love to see comments!

    1. I follow blogs like that, as well, where there are occasional posts. Some like doing it part time, which is fine. The blogs I stop following are completely inactive (over a year), no longer in existence or have unsubscribed from mine. When someone ditches my blog from their list it's clear that they don't really want to associate anymore, so we can part ways peacefully. I never remove blogs just because the bloggers don't comment. That doesn't bother me at all. It just means we don't have that type of exchange. There are blogs I read that I never comment on or comment very rarely. Because you're right: sometimes you just don't have anything to add and sometimes you just don't know what to say.

  20. I follow quite a few blogs, but don't comment on all of them. I do read yours regularly, even if I don't comment often. Partly it's because I use an ioad for reading blogs. It's great for reading, but awkward for commenting.

    1. I totally understand that. I am the same way. There are blogs, like yours, that I read regularly but don't always comment!

  21. Oooh, may I forever stay on your list! I always love your visits!

I did try cleaning up my blogroll a long time ago... When I first started blogging I used to follow/visit a lot of blogs where the owners basically ignored my presence. But one-sided relationships are no fun! I'd much rather have real blogging friends where the interest in each other's blogs is mutual. So, I took most of those off my list (there are one or two I still stalk though ;) ).

A year or so ago I realized I still couldn't keep up with my blogroll, so I started just visiting the blogs of those who comment each post (plus making random visits to the blogs I absolutely love). I still look at my blogroll occasionally, but only click posts if they look really interesting.

One of these days I may switch back to getting my posts from a feed, but I think I'll have to get a totally new one (on Feedly or something) with just the blogs I love.

  26. Hi Martha, I've been away from my blog for awhile... it seems there are so many other social media platforms that I'm on now that blogging has taken a back seat! Some of those like Twitter and Instagram or so fast and easy to use. I try to leave comments when I can but some blogs are really hard to get to (Not Yours), the ones that have been hooked up to Google plus drive me nuts and it seems like it takes a dozen clicks to get where I want! My Blog list sidebar gadget wasn't working for a long time, but I tried it again and just included the blogs where people actually visit me and now I should have an easier time keeping up with you and my other favorite blogs!

    1. There are so many social media platforms! I try to limit myself to a few, so I don't spiral out of control. I'm so glad to see you here. I hope you've had a lovely summer!

  27. I do this often too. I try to get ahead of the game as some people ended up destroying theirs and you can't really unfollow them anymore.

I try to follow a good number of others. But there are two main reasons why I stop with someone. Either they stop visiting me or their works just don't interest me or are just plain awful. Like I can't into someone's posts who writes fiction all the time. And someone people write stuff that seems like bad poetry and it never gets any better.

I also get a little annoyed with people I call "tennis commentators". Where they will only comment if you comment on theirs. And I don't mean just that first time, I mean EVERY TIME. We all are going to miss a few or at least late with it.

I do get rather ticked off when I know someone isn't following me anymore after a rather reasonable relationship where there was a decent back and forth commenting. I had two people I realized had basically snubbed me even though I'm not quite sure why.

    1. "Tennis commentators" That's an interesting term! And you are right: we do miss posts because...well...life. Commenting now and then, and keeping up with each other as reasonably as possible is a good blogging relationship.

    1. This may be only the second or third time I've done this since I started blogging. It was mostly the removal of dead blogs. My lists had really spun out of control and I had to scroll down quite a bit to get to active blogs. Now everything is much cleaner. I probably won't be doing this again for a long while! And commenting and receiving comments is the best. That's how we become blogging pals!

  29. I do a blog cull at the end of every year. If the person hasn't blogged in over a year they go as they more than likely won't be coming back.

But...i also haven't followed anyone in ages cause...we're do you go to follow blogs? I used to make a note of the followers the blogs I followed had and find some that way. But either I'm too tired or too lazy to find more people to follow, lol.
