Happiness Is...

...this kitty snuggling up to me.

This is extra special because this is not my cat. It is my hospice client's cat. There are actually four cats - all rescues and all females - in the house and this is one of them.

When I first started volunteering with this family, only one of their cats acknowledged me from the get go. She would talk to me and I'd talk back. Yes, I speak cat. And she'd let me pet her. She actually insisted I do so. The other three kept their distance. In fact, I didn't get a glimpse of them for a very long time. They hid slept in the basement the whole time I was there.

Well, the weeks and months passed, and with my regular visits, (almost) all of them started getting used to my being there every Wednesday. Curiosity got the better of them and two of the three skeptics snuck a peek. From a safe distance.  A few weeks later the same two started sleeping nearby and a few weeks after that, they let me pet them. For a second or two.

Then yesterday, this one jumped on the couch, parked herself right next to me, placed a paw and her head on my leg and took a nap. She let me pet her for as long as I wanted and purred up a storm.

I'm in! I'm in the circle of trust. And it only took about a year. *snort*

Number four is still suspicious. But she did come up from the basement yesterday to glare look at me, so there's hope.

  1. This is so sweet. You're wonderful for doing hospice, and I'm glad you have purrks (sorry for the horrible pun) like that.

  7. Sweet kitty. What an adorable post. You speak Cat; I speak Dog. I attempt Cat but can never get the accent right. Same problem with French.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. That is very true. It is an honour when a cat says "I think you're okay".

  9. You can feel honored and loved, Martha...cats are very finicky about who can be there friend. I don't doubt for a minute that number four is just about there.
    Lovely cat...btw~

  12. Thats why I try to get to know people's cats if they are still kittens. Cats have trust issues

  13. Saw a women with a tee shirt that said, "I like cats, but I can't eat one all by myself." I like cats, but they make me sneeze.

  14. Dogs are a part of my life but our one cat, ( who isn't a cuddly cat) is as important as breathing

  15. Awww...so cute. I love cats but recognize that many are very standoffish except to their own person or people. I think it's sweet that all of them are at least coming around to check you out. That's a start.

    1. When a cat likes you it's quite a compliment. At least they're coming around now. Even if it did take along time for most of them!

  16. You are one of the chosen. It is an honour. I'm still waiting for our "new" little guy to become a lap cat. He's pretty squirmy. -Jenn

    1. It is definitely an honour to be one of the 'chosen'. It took long enough but cats take their time about these things.

  17. Cats. They certainly not dogs! When I am at work the dogs are SO HAPPY I have come to visit. Cats give me a look of disdain and disgust and turn their back on me.

  18. Cats are quie peculiar. I don't really cuddle my housemate cats but they seem to prefer me than him. He cleans up after them, feed them etc but the cats still wanna sit next to me.
In Islam, being loved by cats is a huge honour as the Prophet was also said to be a great cat lover.

    1. I didn't know that about cats and Islam! That is fascinating. And I guess I should take this cat's affection as a big compliment.

  19. That is sweet that the cats have come to accept you. Our indoor cat is the same way--she hides in the basement or a closet whenever company comes. She's never been much for craving human attention. In the winter though in particular, she is much more friendly to me. On cold days, I sit down and a moment later she is in my lap. I get up and go somewhere, come back, and she's right back on my lap. I love her for that, as she's a perfect lap-warmer!

    1. Aw, she likes you! That is very sweet. It is quite a compliment that she wants to be so close to you when she hides from others or avoids them. She has learned to trust you more than anyone else!

  20. She knows a cat person when she sees one and she knows you are helping her human. A cat's trust is a blessing. Good for you.

    1. She came to sit between me and her human, which makes me think that she feels something about my helping someone she loves. It wouldn't surprise me. Animals seems to have a special sense.
