You're Probably Around My Age If...

...you've ever used one of these.

Do you remember typewriters? Did you learn how to use one? We had typing classes in high school but I never took any. But I did sign up for a course in the evening when I was in college and learned how to type quite well. My typing skills came in very handy for school assignments and for preparing my resume for job hunting. And they were extremely beneficial at my first full time job where we had computers. I was just as fast on the keyboard as I could be on the typewriter, which came in handy.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

    2. You know, I'm not sure. Probably 10 or so. My favorite one is an electric one that types cursive.

    3. Cursive! That's awesome. I've never even heard of one like that.

    1. I'm so glad I took the typing course, Betty. It's still very useful with the keyboard.

  4. Used one! Owned one! Worked in an office on one...
and actually hated to give my typewriter and word processor up for a computer...
but now there is no going back for me, I'm hooked :)

    1. I know what you mean, Jan. What I love about the computers is that you can simply backspace and get rid of errors!

  5. I've used one just for fun before though I can't remember the exact circumstances. I do recall that I very much enjoyed feeding the paper in. I think I spent much more time playing computer games to learn typing although, once again, I can't remember exactly. At least I remember how to type!

    1. You are much younger, Hannah, so typewriters are out of your age range! LOL...

  6. Ohhh...yeah....I took a year of typing in high school. It's the only class from that era whose skills I still use today - even though my typing is now on a computer keyboard. As a matter of fact my high school graduation present was an electric typwriter (I'm really dating myself now!) Thanks for the blast from the past.

  7. I certainly remember these! Wow, now they are antiques. Typing class in high school was one of the most handy courses I ever took.

  8. Yes, I took typing in highschool, and it came in very handy. I wrote a ton of essays in university and was able to type my own essays quickly. I started on a used manual typewriter. Then my housemate got a used electric typewriter and we thought we'd died and gone to heaven! I still use my skills now, except on a keyboard. -Jenn

    1. I know that feeling, Jenn. I started on a manual typewriter, too, so when that electric one came along it was amazing!

  9. I've used a typewriter . I was a terrible typer and probably cried a few times as when you make a mistake you throw the paper way. the computer was a godsend as I could correct all the mistakes I noticed.

    1. I have to agree. The computer was truly a godsend. No more having to toss papers away or correct them!

  10. I took typing class. Do they even offer them anymore?

    1. I've no idea. Maybe not. But I imagine typing skills come in very handy on a keyboard.

  11. Took typing in high school and typed ever since. Except now my fingers sometimes get confused!

  12. My mom had one. I played with it but never "used" one. I had computer typing in middle school and the teacher didn't teach us jack. I had typing in 9th grade and honestly it's a good thing I paid attention because that's all I got training in.

    1. Well, this answers Birdie's question! I didn't know they offered typing classes that recently. I wonder if they still do.

  13. I learned to type on a typewriter, still have to look at the keyboard.
The bad thing about them is that if you make a mistake you have retype the entire page or
erase the mistake. But that would look sloppy.

    1. I know. I prefer the computer keyboard. No more tossing out papers or correcting errors!

  14. I learned to type on a manual typewriter in Grade 9 typing. In Grade 10, we advanced to the oh so modern electric typewriter. My daughter took a Business course about 6 years ago in Grade 10 and she had about 2 weeks of typing, sorry keyboarding. Typing is the one useful thing I still use from high school. I don't like the new following thing either.

    1. Ah, keyboarding! Now that sounds familiar. I should ask my daughters if they took that. I think one of them mentioned it at some point. Thanks for leaving a comment. I will check out your blog!

    1. Very cool, Jim. I imagine most of us (slightly older :) folks put our typewriter skills to good use on the keyboard!

  17. We had a typewriter at home. I played around with it. When I was in high school, my mother nagged me to take typing. I adamantly refused because she said I could be a good secretary. I wasn't going to be someone's secretary. Someone else had to be my secretary. Mother didn't think very highly of my potential.

    Love,
    Janie

  18. I still own a typewriter. I bought one just a few years ago when I had a lot of forms that needed filling out and I wanted to type them rather than hand print the information.

I actually did take classes in high school and am quite a fast typist. Unfortunately, speed comes with more errors. (at least for me)

  19. Oh my god! We had typing class too but I think ours were a little more modern and cream. It was year 10 in high school or 1989. We have five years of high school 8-12. Some schools go to year 13. Primary school is grades 1-7. I was the fastest in my class. Just as well I got all that practise in, I hand write my books and type them all up myself.
