Chuckles and Chortles

Happy Monday, blogging pals. How are you all doing? What have you been up to? How was your weekend? As you may (or may not) have noticed, I didn't blog on Friday. I've had an insanely busy week...unpacking. !!!!! Yuppers, you heard that right. We finished washing and painting the entire house from ceiling to floor and now we are getting it in order. Fi-na-lly. And just in time for the holidays.

🎵 doing the happy dance 🎵

I started by unpacking all our books, and then moved on to all our home décor and lamps and decorative pillows and throws and picture frames and photo albums and whatnots. It took days to open up all the boxes, sort through them and put things where they belong. And you know what else? I got rid of a huge chunk of our stuff: 20% of the books and about 80% of the rest. All of it donated to the Salvation Army. We have been there several times since we moved here and I'm guessing they will see us again and again. Our goal when we moved here was to downsize, get rid of the excess and simplify our lives. So far, so good.

And that's what's been keeping me busy. There is still some work to do but the worst of it is over.

Now, let's get to the funny stuff.

Have a good one!

  3. Yay! I'm very happy for you, Martha! I'm slowly eliminating things at home. I parted with my beloved "National Geographic" collection, but books are way harder. No moving pressure just yet, thank goodness! Enjoy your new space!

    1. It can be very difficult to declutter. Books are usually my weakness. But still, I force myself to slowly get rid of them. The better titles I offer to my daughters, both readers, which makes it easier. It's a tough task but every room that gets streamlined brings joy. Less clutter = less cleaning and maintenance, which leaves more time to do things I enjoy.

  8. I always love your Chuckles & Chortles, Martha ... this week, especially the comma/apostrophe and the hairless kitten - hee hee!

Wow, you have really done well with the paring down! When you say 80% of the rest (aside from books) it sounds like you've made some big decisions. That's a lot of things. Good on ya. I bet you're going to appreciate the holiday season so much this year after all that work.

    1. It's been a tough job streamlining but I've been saying (as I open each box) "If it fits, it sits. If it doesn't, it gits" LOL Our previous home was almost double the size and there isn't even enough room here to accommodate all the fillers (home décor, decorative pillows, throw blankets, etc.). And with more rooms in the old house, we also had excess furniture. A lot of that disappeared, as well. Also, the 80% that I am referring to wasn't based on all our belongings. It was based on whatever was in the boxes that had home décor and pillows and throws and table lamps and picture frames and artwork and so on in them. There was no need for them, and in many cases, no desire.

  9. Oh yayyyyy!! I'm very happy for you, unpacking your boxes and getting settled in. Downsizing is a dream of mine, at least to get rid of extra "stuff". Have you managed to stop storing things for your daughters? I still have boxes of "special toys" and tap shoes and memorable pieces of art and school projects. -Jenn

    1. My older daughter has had her own place for years, so she's taken all her belongings. The younger one shares an apartment with other university students and she took a lot of things with her but not everything. Even so, I only have one large storage bin of her things here. She cleaned up before she left for university, which made a huge difference. So aside from that bin and some photo albums and laminate photos, I don't have all that much stored here for either of the girls.

  10. What a good thing to be unpacked and then to get rid of things in the process! So very freeing! LOL on the first one with the attorney and doctor :)

I did notice that you didn't blog on Friday; double checked to make sure I didn't miss anything.

    1. It's been a long road from selling our home to buying a new one to fixing it up to unpacking...but we're finally here! I can't tell you what a huge relief it is!

  11. Just as you are decluttering it looks like we will be adding boxes and boxes of crap, because we have just sold our mother's house and I have no idea what we will be doing with all of it's contents, especially as she's still alive.

    Thanks for all the laughs!

    1. Thanks, Baili! It is not easy giving away books but I have many more to enjoy. And someone else will get to read the ones I've already enjoyed. It's been a long process but our home is finally coming together. And because it's been washed and painted from top to bottom, it's a joy to look at. Hard work is paying off!

  15. I laughed so hard at the limbo dance cartoon but ONLY because she's wearing a fanny pack lol...talk about an eighties gal, mind you, I do have one too, for dog walking I claim lol...great funnies Martha. Congrats on the house! How liberating...I WISH we could downsize right now, but Alex and I agreed it will happen when we start the moving process...until then we are happy hoarder lol...

    1. LOL...I have one too, Rain! It comes in handy at times :)

It is very liberating getting rid of the excess. I'm so tired of cleaning and straightening out and the maintenance. I've done it for years. Now I just want to walk around with my Swiffer (I have one of those...LOL) and clean up as quickly as possible. Then I can be free to enjoy what makes me happy.

I showed him - and yes - he too was laughing. So from us both, thanks for laughs today!

Hope your week is going well.

    All the best Jan

A most positive step forward. I know that unpacking can bring all sorts of discoveries. All the best with it all.
