This Week

It’s been a very peaceful week. This is what happens when you stay away from negative news. I’ve been focusing on being mindful of the present moment and staying positive. I’d rather be watching funny cat videos than ones about people, particularly politicians, behaving badly. And some of them behave very badly. Aren’t they supposed to be working for the people instead of their own self interests? When did that become the norm? Such arrogance. Such greed. Bleh...I’m tired of it all.

You know what else I’m tired of? Winter. Bleh to that, too. Snow and cold. That’s what January has been all about. And the past few days have also included ice. Earlier this week the temperature rose and some snow melted leaving puddles of water everywhere. And then BAM it got really cold and those puddles froze making it hard to drive and even harder to walk. The sidewalks are an icy mess. Spriiiiiing...hurry up and get here!

Speaking of cats, today we head over to the local humane society to officially adopt the kitten that has been bouncing around our house. Yup, she hasn’t been entirely ours all this time; we’ve actually been fostering her. This was not our decision but the shelter’s. Without going into a lengthy and boring explanation, let’s just say that the shelter wanted to remain responsible for the kitten, particularly medically, for a couple of weeks after she got spayed. Kitten (we still haven’t named her!) is doing great and very soon she'll be a permanent member of our household.

This little miss is very comfortable around here.

I’m drawing less than I’d like to but that can’t be helped. There are other things taking up my time right now and that’s okay. It’ll all balance out eventually. But here are some (old and new) attempts:

Have you ever had a conversation with someone that begins to speak immediately after you’ve stopped or someone who keeps interrupting? That can be quite frustrating. When someone does this they haven’t heard a word you’ve said, they’ve been too busy thinking about what they want to say instead. It’s not easy to refrain from jumping in, especially when emotions get the best of us, but communication is so much better when we make an effort to remain silent and just listen.

That’s the lesson for the day. You’re welcome!

And make sure to have a wonderful weekend.

  1. Speaking of your politicians, I saw a video of shark tank which is a show I never really watched and they had clips Kevin "Mr. Wonderful" O'Leary being a total douchebag. Like a very creepy bald Simon Cowell but lacking the charm and humor.

Then I found out he tried to run for Prime Minister in Canada as a Conservative...

    1. UGH...Kevin O'Leary. He's absolutely a total douchebag. He campaigned to be leader of the Conservative Party of Canada but later dropped out. Good riddance.

  3. Love that the shelter cares so much about their kittens. Beautiful art today, thanks for sharing!

  4. It's funny isn't it, how we avoid thinking, watching and talking about politics but the minute we do we start getting wound up!

Glad you and your kitty are bonding! Our pets can be so helpful in keeping our stress levels low. Kitty looks exactly like our old cat Patches. I looked up how to say Patches in Basque and it is adabaki! I might talk The Guy into heading to Haven Humane and looking for an Adabaki for ourselves.

    1. Oh that would be great, Toni. There are so many wonderful animals waiting for good homes.

I'm happy to step away from politics. It gets very tiresome!

  5. That is a fine Wizard of Oz cartoon, and we can never go wrong with wisdom from the Dalai Lama. Good post.

  6. Cute Kitty!

I think I talk too much and don't listen enough. It's more of a nervous habit really but it must be really annoying.

  7. hahaha, my sister and i were just talking about this interrupting thing when we talk - both of us do it but i think it's because there is some odd pause in the phone connection (she got a new iphone and it's problematic at times)...so we both interrupt the other one but it's usually about something we have in common and we get excited to share it. Love your grumpy cat especially - ...good for you to keep drawing when your busy. I love that sweet little cat lying there already - i hope to see lots of photos of her in the past. I rarely read or watch any news of the circus that is our world politicians.

    1. She is a really sweet little cat and she has settled in beautifully. I will be taking more photos of her over time, maybe when she calms down! LOL Whenever I try to take a picture of her, she thinks I want to pet her or play and she gets overly excited. LOL

  8. Look at those big feet on kitten!!! She looks so comfy! When we adopted Charlie, Jack, Marlene and Oscar the cat, it was a fostering program first and then official adoption 3 months later. We knew we were keeping them anyway! I love your drawings Martha...and the Pink Panther just got me thinking for some reason of the movie Murder By Death, have you seen it? I think it's Peter Sellers best movie...that's why I thought of it lol...I loved the Pink Panthers with him.

Politics? What's that? LOL...so out of touch and PROUD and happy to be! :)

That's interesting what you are mentioning...I had a discussion with another blogger recently about how people are planning their response before they even hear what you've said. Yes, it's frustrating and sometimes if you mention it, people guilty of it will actually get bent out of shape about it. I usually give up at that point, figuring I haven't been heard at all. Alex hears me, my friends hear me, my furry kids hear me...that's all I care about! :)

    1. Can you believe the feet on this little thing? LOL It was one of the first things I noticed. And her legs are so long, especially in the back, which is the case with most kittens. It's like they're jacked up...haha. And her tail...holy moly...it is awfully long for her size. When it isn't up in the air, it drags on the floor behind her (slight exaggeration :) and sweeps up everything along the way.

I used to watch the Pink Panther cartoons with my brothers when we were kids. I loved that show. I haven't seen the movie Murder By Death. At least I don't think so. I'll have to look it up. Peter Sellers was hilarious. Very sad that he died so young.

  9. Wonderful quote from the Dalai Lama. I can't wait to know the kitten's name :) Have a great weekend! PS- nice drawings :)

  10. A very good reminder about listening, Martha. It think it's only human nature to want to respond immediately especially if we disagree with something, but it makes us better people if we really try to listen fully. I'm as guilty as anyone so I'm glad to have this bit of wisdom repeated to me as often as possible :)

  12. When somebody butts in and dominates the conversation I tune out. It's one way.

    1. Definitely. It becomes a one-way conversation anyhow. I think some people like to listen to themselves speak :)

  14. Hi Martha, i’m on day 10 of giving up sugar. It’s been tough. Having said that, i’ve known tougher days. It doesn’t’t seem that long ago that we were kids. It was great. We’re lucky because we don’t get the kind of weather that Canada does. We get rain - and plenty of it. Not having had sugar for so long leaves you feeling like you want to rip everyone’s head off. It’s not a good feeling. I hop it wears off soon.

    1. As long as you're just thinking it and not doing it, it's okay! LOL I hope that feeling wears off. It's not easy giving up sugar. It's quite addictive.

Love your fish drawing, and I'm sure in time you will be doing more and more as things balance out a bit.

  18. The cartoon is brilliant! I'm so disgusted with politicians right now, especially here in the USA! Your nameless kitty is certainly cute! So many lovely colors. Sometimes I'm guilty of interrupting. Thanks for the reminder to be more patient! Wishing you and George a happy week. Stay clear of ice!

    1. Until the people start demanding for their politicians to start serving the people instead of their own self interests, it's going to be this way. Personally I'm fed up with politics in general.

  19. Hell yeah I know someone who constantly talks over me, my mother! I find it incredibly disrespectful, and it says they are arrogant, think their own opinion is more important, and they just don't care about what you're saying. It's damn rude.

    1. It is very frustrating to be in a conversation where you can't get a word in. I don't mind when people get over excited about a subject and get carried away, but dominating a whole conversation is another thing.

  20. i am sorry for the weather's negative effect on your mood but the positive thing is that you are doing GREAT by creating such BEAUTIFUL and LOVELY art!!!

    Your question made me laugh
yes i have few people around me(inlaws) who never listen what other talk they just wait for other to finish and just burst out their own thoughts and talks
i find such people very ignorant

i LOVED the wise words and by the grace of God i am glad that i am a good listener
