You Asked, I Answer (Blogging)

It’s time to get to the questions my blogging pals asked in this year’s Ask Me Anything invitation. If you haven’t participated and would like to, go here. For those that did participate, you rock. Thank you!

Okay, let’s get to it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terry asked:
How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging since 2009. My first post went live on May 21st of that year. Since then I’ve published over 3,000 posts and had 1,253,739 page views. And counting. That may seem like a lot but it actually isn’t. There are blogs that get far more than that, especially for folks who do this for a living.

So it’s been a long time, Terry. I never would have imagined that years later I’d still be blogging but here I am.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) Toni asked:
What inspired you to blog?

All the cool kids were doing it and I wanted in.

Actually, reading other blogs was my main inspiration. It was fun and interesting and a great way to connect with people. I enjoyed a variety of blogs so much that I decided at one point to start my own because, hey, I have something to say, too. And I’ve been yapping away since 2009.

Over the years I’ve met some amazing people from all over. Some have quit their online presence completely, some come and go, and some have been blogging steadily for years. The best of all are those who I’ve been ‘hanging out’ with for a very long time. We’ve traveled together, learned about one another and offered support when needed. I've even witnessed some of the younger ones grow up. It is very heartwarming.

And I never would have met all these wonderful people who are creative and supportive and entertaining and inspirational if not for blogging. People who make me laugh and think and sometimes even cry. So YAY to blogging!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LL Cool Joe asked:
Have you ever thought about closing your blog? I have several times and I just wondered if I'm alone in this or do other bloggers ever feel that way too.

Yes. And no. I’ve had moments where I feel like quitting but mostly I’ve thought about suspending it, especially during those periods where my motivation to post something – anything - is very low. The past few months have been that way.

I feel like I’m a little burnt out with my blog and I’ve barely been keeping it alive. I’ve run out of things to say and sometimes feel slightly overwhelmed by the prospect of putting together a post. I believe a lot of it comes from how insanely busy we were last year with our home’s cleanup and renovations. We exhausted ourselves and we’ve spent the winter licking our wounds. Plus, I’m not a fan of winter and my energy and motivation are low during that period anyway. Now that spring is here and we don’t have as much to do as last year, I’m hoping to pick up the pace.

So yes, I’ve thought about shutting down my blog. But do I have any intention on doing that? No. As long as my favourite bloggers are still around, I will keep this site live!

And that’s it for now. I’ll answer another bunch of questions next week.

Happy Wednesday to all!

  1. Hi Martha, i became a vegan this week. I thought that’s for me. I always fancied a bit of space travel. They said no, that’s a Vulcan!. Oh, right. Anyway, I enjoyed reading your Q and A’s. It was very good. I can’t imagine you ever quitting.

    1. HAHA! This made me smile, Terry. Space travel would be fun, don't you think? My younger daughter is vegan. She makes it seem to easy! I hope it is for you, too. Enjoy!

  3. I'm glad I finally checked out your blog after seeing your name in the comments of various blogs I would visit. I enjoyed your answers and totally understand where you are coming from when you contemplate closing your blog - but at least you don't because you pick the bestest cartoons, lol. I'm glad to know you by the way.

  4. That's a nice post to read Martha, getting to know you a wee bit more :) I started blogging in 2007-ish. I did close mine down for a few years but that was due to getting my life back in order and I didn't want to be distracted by anything so I could focus on my goal. Now though, I'm so happy to be back to blogging. It's everything you said it is, and I've met such lovely creative souls! :) You included! :)

  5. Always interesting to read about other bloggers' experiences and thoughts. Nine years makes you one of the most long-lived bloggers in my list! I hear you on the times that inspiration dries up. But no one should feel pressured. This is supposed to be a creative outlet, not a job :)

    1. Absolutely right! This is supposed to be fun, not a chore. So I just don't blog when the inspiration is not there. But that doesn't stop me from visiting other blogs and enjoying those!

  9. Thanks for answering my question. I can relate to all you are saying, I tend to just stop blogging for a while when I feel too overwhelmed by everything in real life, but I think I'd regret closing my blog, and I'd definitely feel sad if you ended yours!
