Where to start... Well, let’s start with how the long break began.
As many of my longtime blogging friends know, we moved to this area last February after we sold our house in Kingston, a city that we loved and lived in for 8 beautiful years. The house selling took forever, totally stressed us out and left us exhausted. As for the new house, it was a mess. Every inch of it needed some work, which left us exhausted since we did everything ourselves. When we finally caught up and felt like we could relax a little, our cat Nacho left us suddenly in January, and that really knocked the wind out of us.
Because we’d been on the ‘go go go’ for so long, I didn’t realize what a toll it had taken on my physical, mental and emotional health. Sometime in the spring, I began to lose motivation and really slow down. Trying to keep up with things became difficult and I didn’t really care to. And this blog felt more like a chore than a place to connect and have fun. I began to resent its very presence. That’s when I knew that a break was necessary, so I took it and it did me wonders. My only concern was whether I’d ever feel like returning here again. Thankfully I did ‘cause here I am!
And that’s the blog break...
What else? We had the summer from hell. It was horribly hot and humid from the beginning of June through to the end of August, and much of the start of September. To top it all off, our car’s air conditioning quit sometime in May. It couldn’t have chosen a worst summer to do so! The most amazing man in the world who is also the handiest tried to fix it but couldn’t. And since we are planning on buying a new car this fall, we didn’t want to spend a crap load of money repairing it at a garage, so we just had to live with the problem. What was the result of summer from hell and no auto air conditioning? Being prisoners in our home more often than not. Rumour has it that one of us – and I won’t name names or point fingers – almost went stark raving mad.
Speaking of cars, we really are in the market for a new one and we’ve been visiting dealerships for the past few weeks. We plan to purchase by the end of October, at the latest. And let me tell you, we’ll be so happy when it’s all over. I cannot stand shopping for a car any more than I can stand shopping for a house. The whole process is stressful.
And finally, here’s the most exciting thing of the year. My younger daughter is fulfilling a lifelong dream. When she was about 7 or 8, she announced that one day she’d go live in New Zealand. And you know what? She made it happen, at least for a short period. As I write this, she is an exchange student in that enchanting country. She got there in the beginning of July and she’ll be returning to Ottawa at the beginning of November. This is the most exciting adventure of her young life! This eternal optimist who lives life passionately and determinedly doesn’t just dream about what she wants, she makes those dreams come true. Here is one of the adventures she experienced recently as a temporary ‘Kiwi’.

Taking the plunge with an equally |
Yup, bungee jumping! Talk about living life boldly. I could never in a million years do this. Okay, maybe if someone offered me a million dollars. But that’s it.
Anyhow, I could keep going on but I’ll stop right here. I thank you all for the warm welcomes earlier this week and wish you a wonderful weekend!
Welcome back, Martha!
ReplyDeleteBungee jumping. NOPE.
Thanks, Birdie!
DeleteSo glad to see you back Martha, and glad you survived the hot summer. Your daughter is amazing, as I follow her fearless adventures.
ReplyDeleteHopefully next summer is much easier! My daughter has always been an adventurous type, so none of this surprises me.
DeleteWhat a wonderful opportunity for your daughter! I'm envious. But not of the bungee jumping. That's a game for the young.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Debra. I don't even bother with roller coasters anymore. I've done my time! LOL
DeleteOh, New Zealand! As a travel agent, I used to ask my most seasoned travelers their MOST favorite place in the world, and New Zealand was always on that list!
ReplyDeleteSorry you had such a crap summer. And here I was thinking you had a photography book deal! :-) You should.
You are sweet, Kay! I'll get back on track with my photography now that things have seemed to have settled down.
DeleteWell, I'm one of those people that wishes to visit New Zealand, although I don't see it happening. If I had to choose a place in the Pacific and could only do one, I'd have to go with Australia. That's my dream destination.
You understood your need for a break, took it and recovered. I wish more people could accomplish a recovery on breaks.
ReplyDeleteI think it's very important to listen to our bodies! A break is important when we need it.
DeleteThe thing about car shopping is that most dealers are so pushy. Which does not make me want to get a car from them.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, Adam! The whole experience has been annoying because of them.
DeleteThat is so neat about your daughter and her adventures! I could never go bungee jumping, but good for her for being "brave" to do so. I wish with car shopping it wasn't such an ordeal. Like you could go in there and buy the car without the haggling over the price, the extensive paperwork required, etc. Takes the joy out of getting a new car.
ReplyDeletebetty
I know, Betty! That's how it's been. Completely stressful. I've never liked visiting dealerships and I'm reminded once again why. It's been quite an ordeal.
DeleteLife can and does give us challenges, eh Martha?
ReplyDeleteWelcome back and good luck with the car-buying. Make sure you get their BEST deal!!
Challenges are good lessons, Jim! Makes us stronger and builds character :) We always try to strike the best deal and since we have a lot of time on our hands and never are in a rush, we are at an advantage!
DeleteWow, kudos to your daughter for living a dream. We all need blogging breaks, I had one because I had knee replacement surgery. I’m back to my site in a limited way. Good luck on the car shopping, not something I want to go through.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda! Nice to see you here. I'm happy to hear that you are back to blogging even in a limited way. Hope that your healing has gone well after the surgery!
DeleteYour daughter sounds like a wonderful young woman. I hope she enjoys all of her adventures. Sorry about your car. Is there no public transit in your city? Good luck with the new car purchase.
ReplyDeleteNo need to be sorry. Our car is still running but it is very old now. Our plan is to get a new one before all the maintenance problems begin. We do have a very good public transit system here but we need our car to visit friends and family in other cities.
DeleteAs you may remember, I hear you on being a prisoner this summer :D It's such a relief to be able to go outside now without fearing heatstroke within five minutes!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the car purchase. My husband does it all for us and presents me with a fait accompli. I dread ever having to buy a car on my own.
I hope your daughter continues to have a marvellous time! I would love to bungee jump but I am far too afraid of falling apart :)
I am ecstatic that this summer is over! Never in my life would I believe I'd ever say that. But it was horrible. Hot, humid, almost no rain...for months on end. I'm glad to see it all go. But I do hope we have a really nice autumn season. It would be sad to have a tough summer and a bad fall season and then BOOM we're in winter mode. Sounds depressing.
DeleteYou are so lucky with the car purchase! I've never bought a car alone and would dread doing so. I think if I had to take the lead, I'd definitely bring someone along for support. Those dealers can be a pain to deal with!
My daughter thrives with these adventures. Although I like traveling, I do like my feet solidly on the ground. Bungee jumping is not on the list! :)
I don't like heights.
ReplyDeleteYou and me both, John!
Deletei enjoyed your catch up post and glad you took that much needed break. Hope you find the perfect car, hear from your youngest often about her adventures, enjoy the cooler months and hopefully not too miuch snow!.
ReplyDeleteI am far from ready for snow, Sandy, so let's hope it doesn't get here any time soon! LOL
DeleteWelcome back! I just realized you were posting again. My mom's SUV doesn't have a/c either and it was not fun. She doesn't like my car though because it is too hard for her to get out of.
ReplyDeleteThis year was really tough without the air conditioning. The heat and humidity just wouldn't let up. Hopefully next summer will be better.
DeleteSome cars are harder to get out than others. When they're really low, I find it a little more difficult.
It is lovely to have you back in blogland, although I know you did visit many blogs during your break away, which was great.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry your summer wasn't too good … but hopefully Autumn and Winter (and beyond!) will be good.
I was fortunate to visit NZ quite a while back now … it's a wonderful country, and I'm sure your daughter is having a fabulous time.
Love that picture, but bungee jumping is something I could never do … I just haven't got a good head for heights.
Hope your weekend has been good - here's to a brand new week :)
All the best Jan
I enjoyed visiting blogs, Jan, even on my break! How else will I keep up with all of you and your news? :)
DeleteFrom the photos that I've seen, NZ looks beautiful. I don't believe I'll ever get there (there are so many countries on my list I'd like to visit) but I can experience it through my daughter. It was a dream for her to go there and it is now a reality!
Here's hoping for a lovely autumn season!
Dear Martha this is pleasure to have you back my friend!
ReplyDeleteglad that finally you are calm and content with your break time and happy to be in contact !
i still feel your pain of loosing your lovely pet Martha!

this is nice that you are buying new car so do we as oir old one was causing problem more than relief
take care my friend
more blessings to you and family!
Thank you, Baili! I am feeling much more energized these days. My daughter is a very daring kid. She has always been that way and I suspect she always will be. She enjoys being very active.
DeleteSky diving! Oh, that can be fun, but as moms, we feel a little bit anxious for our children. But I'm sure he will have lots of fun. And it will be an adventure he will never forget!
Happy week to you! And many blessing to your family, as well xo
