This (Holiday) Week

It’s Friday again! It returns faster than I can say “where the heck did the week go?” But that’s fine. This is actually my favourite day of the week. Maybe it’s because it’s the bridge between the week ending and the weekend beginning. This was especially important when I was working full time as a single mom with young kids. Weekends couldn't come fast enough. Those days are long gone but the sentiment remains. What’s your favourite day of the week?

So yesterday evening while I was doing a drawing, I was listening to holiday music. And one of the songs I was enjoying is “The Little Drummer Boy” sung by Bob Seger; the absolute best version, in my opinion. Now some people like this song, others cannot stand it. Well phooey to the latter. I have fond memories of this song all the way back to my childhood. It is – and always will be – a favourite.

I also like the song below (Boney M - Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord). It has a very ‘island music’ tone to it. I imagine myself dancing to it on a Caribbean beach. Not that I’d ever want to be away during Christmas. I love getting together with my family to celebrate. But I’d have no problem at all boarding a plane for a warmer place the day after. I would like nothing more – at least once in my life – to bring in the New Year on a tropical island. The most amazing man in the world says we will do this one year. I think so, too. It’s just a matter of time...and money. Especially money.

Here's another video for those who can't see the one above:

Okay, now here’s some old artwork. It’s nothing special but it fits nicely with the holidays and extends this blog post:

And finally, you know what I’m really excited about? Everyone coming here for Christmas. And this year – for the first time - my younger daughter’s boyfriend will be joining us. The older daughter’s boyfriend has been joining us for years but the younger one’s hasn’t been able to. He has family commitments on the 24th and 25th that make it impossible. So what’s different about this year? Get this... I decided to have everyone over on the 26th instead! There’s no rule that says we have to celebrate on Christmas Eve or Christmas day. And even if there was a rule, I’d break it. Because that’s how I roll. So this year it’s a full house and I could just burst with joy. But I won’t because the family is counting on me hosting Christmas.

That’s all for now, friends. Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I agree there's no rule on what day we celebrate Christmas. We've done it a week before, a week after, whatever. Just having everyone together makes it special, no matter what day you celebrate. I like the snow globe picture!

My favorite day of the week is Friday even though now I work Saturdays. We go out to eat on Friday nights so its always a special thing to look forward to.

    1. As families grow, it gets more difficult to bring everyone together. So whatever day works for all, that's the best day!

  4. Yes, yes, don't burst! Just use that joy to float instead!

What a smart solution to the problem of missing family. Holidays are just dates on the calendar. Family get-togethers are the really vital part.

I like Fridays, too. Although weekends are good also, even if they've got a tad too much laundry and housework involved for my liking :)

    1. I really wanted my daughter's boyfriend to join us. It just wouldn't be the same without him! I'm just happy we were able to find a day that works for everyone. It's no easy task with different work schedules and holiday obligations!

  5. Totally agree. Some years we've celebrated Christmas on the 27th or 28th or Jan. 1st. Depends on when everyone can get here (or there!).

  8. Glad to find some fellow Boney M fans in the blogosphere.

Believe it or not, the first time I heard their music was in 1979 -- in the Jordanian desert. A group of Bedouins were playing it on a boom box. They have fans everywhere!

By the way, the video embedded doesn't play in the US (at least, that's the message I got when I clicked on it). Here's another version.

    1. I am definitely a fan of theirs! Some of the songs I really like include "Daddy Cool" and "Rasputin". That's pretty cool about them having fans all over the world. Music certainly unites us.

And thanks for the link to the other version. I've embedded that video, as well, for those who can't see the first one.

  13. My favourite day of the week is Monday. Well I am a dj. Monday is quiet and peaceful and I usually have the house to myself.

In the UK the 26th December is Boxing Day and usually it's the day when all the family are together, so are just celebrating it the way we Brits do!

  15. Hi Martha :)

My favourite day of the week? EVERY DAY. :) Well, every day where there are no tourists or weekenders spoiling the quiet!!! :) I just love being at home with Alex and the furries! :)

I downloaded all of the stop-animation type of Christmas specials from the 60's. I watched Rudolph this morning. I have The Little Drummer Boy...that scene where he played the drum always made me cry! :)

Your drawings are cute! I love the snow globe!! That's great about your Boxing Day Christmas Day!!! :)

    1. I can just imagine how annoying it can be when there are a lot of tourists around...and beer. LOL When they're not around, it is such a peaceful area to be in. The Little Drummer Boy has always been a favourite character. It's a sweet story.
